MacNN | iPhone News: Skype, TomTom, Vimeo iOS apps get major updates

Skype allows merging Messenger, Hotmail, Outlook contacts

Several key iOS apps have received major updates today, most notably Skype and Skype for iPad. The pair can now access Messenger, Hotmail, and Outlook.com contacts after a person has entered their Microsoft account info. People who haven't used Skype before can now finally create an account from within the app, and instant messaging has been improved with selectable emoticons, and the ability to edit messages by tapping and holding. On the dialpad, saved phone numbers can be edited without having to visit a separate window.

The various regional versions of the TomTom app have been upgraded to 1.12. The apps are now fully compatible with iOS 6, and optimized for the iPhone 5. Beyond this, TomTom has decided to strip out Google Local Search, since Google itself has discontinued the service. In its place the app now sports TomTom Places, which like its predecessor locates nearby points of interest. Other changes include an enhanced "HD" Traffic service, and the ability to select TomTom as a routing option for iOS 6's native Maps app.

The Vimeo app has been upgraded to v3.0, and uses a new tab-based layout, which also includes a new Feed view. Native Twitter and Facebook sharing has been implemented, and in fact uploaded videos can be set to share automatically; the uploading process, meanwhile, can now take place in the background. The option to manage Watch Later queues has been added, but the iPhone clip editor has been removed -- Vimeo notes that active projects can be salvaged by downloading them to the Camera Roll.
