President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner met Sunday at the White House to discuss the ongoing negotiations over the impending "fiscal cliff," the first meeting between just the two leaders since they both won re-election.

Spokesmen for both Obama and Boehner said they agreed to not release details of the conversation, but emphasized that the lines of communication remain open.

The meeting comes as the White House and Congress try to break an impasse over finding a way to stop a combination of automatic tax increases and spending cuts scheduled to kick in at the beginning of next year.

Obama met in November with Boehner, as well as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. The president spoke by telephone with Reid and in person with Pelosi on Friday. The president is traveling to Redford, Mich., on Monday to promote his agenda in a speech to workers at an engine factory; auto workers helped Obama win Michigan in last month's election.

Obama has been pushing higher tax rates on the wealthiest Americans as one way to reduce the deficit ? a position Boehner and other House Republicans have been steadfastly against. Republicans are demanding steeper cuts in costly government entitlement programs like Medicare and Social Security.

One GOP senator said Sunday that Senate Republicans would probably agree to higher tax rates on the wealthiest Americans if it meant getting a chance to overhaul entitlement programs.

The comments by Bob Corker of Tennessee ? a fiscal conservative who has been gaining stature in the Senate as a pragmatic deal broker ? puts new pressure on Boehner and other Republican leaders to rethink their long-held assertion that even the very rich shouldn't see their rates go up next year. GOP leaders have argued that the revenue gained by hiking the top two tax rates would be trivial to the deficit, and that any tax hike hurts job creation.

But Corker said insisting on that red line ? especially since Obama won re-election after campaigning on raising tax rates on the wealthy ? might not be wise.

"There is a growing group of folks looking at this and realizing that we don't have a lot of cards as it relates to the tax issue before year end," Corker told "Fox News Sunday."

If Republicans agree to Obama's plan to increase rates on the top 2 percent of Americans, Corker added, "the focus then shifts to entitlements and maybe it puts us in a place where we actually can do something that really saves the nation."

Besides getting tax hikes through the Republican-dominated House, Corker's proposal faces another hurdle: Democrats haven't been receptive to GOP proposals on the entitlement programs. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill., on Sunday was skeptical about proposals to increase the eligibility age for Medicare from 65 to 67. He said he doesn't see Congress addressing the complicated issue of Medicare overhaul in the three weeks remaining before the end of the year.

FDA OKs Expanded Use of Prostate Cancer Drug - Drugs.com ...

MONDAY Dec. 10, 2012 -- The approved use of the drug Zytiga has been expanded to include treatment of men with late-stage, hormone therapy-resistant prostate cancer before they undergo chemotherapy, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Monday.

Zytiga was initially approved in April 2011 for treatment of prostate cancer patients whose disease had progressed after treatment with the chemotherapy drug docetaxel.

The drug decreases production of the male sex hormone testosterone. In prostate cancer, testosterone stimulates prostate tumors to grow. Drugs or surgery are used to reduce testosterone production or to block the hormone's effects.

However, some men have what's called "castration-resistant" or hormone therapy-resistant prostate cancer, which means that prostate cancer cells continue to grow even with low levels of testosterone, the FDA explained in a news release.

The expanded approval is based on a study of 1,088 men with late-stage, hormone therapy-resistant prostate cancer who took either Zytiga (abiraterone acetate) or an inactive placebo in combination with another drug called prednisone.

Median overall survival was just over 35 months for patients who took Zytiga and about 30 months for those who took the placebo, the FDA noted.

The most common side effects among patients taking Zytiga included fatigue, joint discomfort, swelling caused by fluid retention, hot flush, diarrhea, vomiting, cough, high blood pressure, shortness of breath, urinary tract infection and bruising.

This expanded approval of Zytiga was made under the FDA's priority review program, which offers an accelerated six-month review for drugs that may offer major advances in treatment or provide a treatment when no adequate therapy exists.

"Today's approval demonstrates the benefit of further evaluating a drug in an earlier disease setting and provides patients and health care providers the option of using Zytiga earlier in the course of treatment," Dr. Richard Pazdur, director of the Office of Oncology Drug Products in the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said in the FDA news release.

Zytiga is marketed by Pennsylvania-based Janssen Biotech Inc.

Joanna Krupa?s relationship to Romain Zago may seem like it?s falling apart right before our eyes on Real Housewives of Miami but Joanna is insisting that filming the show actually helped her communicate with her fiance a lot better! The couple broke up a few weeks ago, calling off their fve and a half year engagement but have recently reconciled. Joanna is also coming to friend Karent?s defense saying that she is real and doesn?t understand why so many seem to dislike her.

Joanna is telling OK! Magazine that since she is bi-coastal and away from Romain too often, she relied on texting and e-mailing to communicate with him. The show required them to actually interact face to face so Joanna is thankful that RHOM helped her communicate better. She tells the magazine, ?I think the reality show in a way saved our relationship because we communicate better. I have a bad way of communicating since I travel so much. I text message and email and you don?t talk face to face and during the show we had to talk about things that were bothering us or things that were happening at the moment so I feel I definitely became better at communicating. I became better at knowing what I want and for me it was like therapy.?

Another perk of the show is Joanna?s new BFF Karent Sierra! Karent has come under fire and Joanna is sticking up for her saying, ?I think she?s very real. I know some people don?t like her and I can?t figure out why. She loves to smile. It?s just her sense of dealing with situations and especially being put in a room with so many crazy vicious women, the best thing is to smile. If we do have another season I?ll be smiling.?

I don?t understand how the show ?saved? her relationship if they clearly had major problems after, including a break-up and calling off their engagement. I do see how it could have improved communication, though.
