(AP) ? A look at key moments this past week in the wrongful death trial in Los Angeles between Michael Jackson's mother, Katherine Jackson, and concert giant AEG Live LLC, and what is expected at court in the week ahead:

THE CASE

Jackson's mother wants a jury to determine that the promoter of Jackson's planned comeback concerts didn't properly investigate Dr. Conrad Murray, who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter by a criminal jury for Jackson's June 2009 death. AEG's attorney says the case is about personal choice, namely Jackson's decision to have Murray serve as his doctor and give him doses of a powerful anesthetic as a sleep aid. Millions, possibly billions, of dollars are at stake.

WHAT HAPPENED THIS PAST WEEK

?Jackson's eldest son, Michael Joseph "Prince" Jackson Jr., told jurors about his upbringing and for the first time publicly described what he saw on the day his father died. He recounted seeing his father hanging halfway off his bed, eyes rolled up in the back of his head while his personal doctor attempted CPR. Prince, 16, told jurors he was crying the whole time, but tried to comfort his siblings on the car ride to the hospital.

?Jackson's longtime makeup artist showed jurors emails she sent to Jackson's manager, warning him the singer may die and stating that she didn't want him and an AEG executive to be branded as "villains" or "financial victims" if tragedy struck.

WHAT THE JURY SAW

? Jurors watched home videos and photos of Jackson and his children, including footage shot on a Christmas morning in which he quizzed his three children about what they wanted to do when they grew older. His daughter, Paris, told her father she wanted to help the poor.

? Jackson's nephews TJ and Taj Jackson break down on the stand as they described the loss of their uncle Michael and the impact on the singer's children.

QUOTABLE MOMENTS

? "He was grabbing his elbow and looked aggressive to me," Prince testified, describing AEG Live CEO Randy Phillips' demeanor during a discussion with Michael Jackson's personal doctor in the singer's rented mansion.

? "I think out of all of my siblings, she was probably hit the hardest. She was my dad's princess. I think without that, it really hurt her a lot," Prince said of his sister Paris, who probably won't testify in the case, an attorney for Katherine Jackson told a judge.

OUTSIDE THE COURTROOM

? Fans delivered more than 13,000 roses to the cemetery where Jackson is interred on Tuesday, the fourth anniversary of the singer's death.

? A woman approached two alternate jurors, telling them not to award the Jackson family any money. The statements prompted an inquiry and Katherine Jackson's attorney said the incident was jury tampering.

? Katherine Jackson and other family members were expected at the Saturday night premiere of Cirque du Soleil's permanent Michael Jackson tribute show, "One," at the Mandalay Bay hotel-casino in Las Vegas.

? The Jacksons singing group ? made up of Michael Jackson brothers and other family members ? perform Sunday at the BET Awards at LA Live ? an AEG property.

WHAT'S NEXT

?Michael Jackson's nephew Taj Jackson may resume testifying, and additional experts will be called in a week that will be shortened to three days by the Independence Day break.

Poland's confused energy strategy turns back to coal

Tim Gosling in Prague

June 28, 2013

Poland is set to boost the role of coal in its energy mix, the prime minister said on June 27, as he officially pushed the country's top utility back into a flagship project to add coal-fired capacity. The move raises further questions over Warsaw's confused energy strategy, its relations with Brussels, and the share prices of state-controlled companies.

Shares in PGE slumped as the energy utility signed off on the PLN11.6bn project to expand the capacity of Opole. Although it was joined in the project by coal miner Kompania Weglowa and state fund Polskie Inwestycje Rozwojowe, concern remains that the plan to add 1.8 gigawatts (GW) will be loss-making due to the current slump in power prices.

On top of that, the worry is that Poland's state-controlled companies are now at the mercy of a government struggling with an unrealistic energy strategy. PGE's share price rose as it pulled out of the plan to expand Opole in April. However, with Prime Minister Donald Tusk having long identified it as a flagship project, the company was bounced back into it earlier this month, accompanied with vague promises of help with financing.

The agreement that PGE has signed with its state-controlled peers will limit the risk of the project being unprofitable, Treasury Minister Wlodzimierz Karpinski said, according to Bloomberg. Prime Minister Donald Tusk added that the project is now set to start this summer.

The idea depressed investors, who are wary of the pressure on Polish state-controlled companies to implement a confused strategy to increase energy security. PGE has already told Warsaw that its hopes of building the country's first nuclear power plants, and developing a significant shale gas industry are unrealistic. "We have to build a model for Opole that will make the project profitable or at least safe for PGE," Tusk said at the signing. "It's not about business for the company but the national interest of all Poles."

On top of that, the government has been pushing for higher dividends to help with its fiscal consolidation efforts in recent years. However, the struggle of the state-controlled companies to keep up with investment demands has seen that drive fading this year. The state treasury added to the pressure by approving a payout well below expectations, which saw PGE shares drop as much as 7% to a session low of PLN14.87, reports Reuters.

The revival of Opole encapsulates the mess that Poland's energy strategy now finds itself. In the face of the difficulties - nuclear power is extremely expensive; shale gas test results have been disappointing thus far - the PM surprised by saying the project will lead a push to increase the role of coal in Poland's energy mix. "Coal will again find its place in the Polish energy mix," Tusk said.

However, thanks to its abundant domestic supplies, Poland already relies on coal for over 90% of its power, but it's rapidly running out of alternatives. Grid operator PSE said recently that the country faces a potential crisis as early as 2016 due to its ageing power plants. The analysis said the country needs to retire up to 6.6GW, or 40%, of its capacity by 2020.

Yet with power prices through the floor - low demand has seen them drop over 30% in the last 12 months - companies are understandably unwilling to invest. A host of projects have been pulled this year. At the same time, much of the blame can be laid at the government's door. It's failure to lay out clear and attractive regulation and tax regimes for both shale gas and renewables such as wind have held back investment.

All of which has Warsaw in hot water with the EU's environmental policymakers. Brussels views Poland as the black sheep when it comes to renewable energy targets: its high use of black coal ? let alone expanding it - is already considered an obstacle in global climate talks, and Warsaw runs a constant battle against supra-national environmental legislation.

Not all musicians fit the stereotype of being self-involved and shallow. In fact, many musicians also care about and promote social causes. When they are not selling-out stadium shows or releasing new albums, these 12 musicians lend their time ? and their voices ? to promote food and agriculture initiatives, and use their celebrity platform to raise money and awareness to combat hunger and poverty.

U.S. charges Chinese wind company with stealing trade secrets

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Chinese wind turbine maker Sinovel Wind Group Co and two of its employees were charged with stealing trade secrets from U.S.-based AMSC by the Department of Justice (DoJ) on Thursday.

A federal grand jury in the Western District of Wisconsin returned an indictment leveling theft charges on Sinovel, two of its employees and a former employee of AMSC, a Devens, Massachusetts-based company that provided wind turbine design, engineering services and power electronics and controls to Sinovel. Authorities said the theft allegedly cost AMSC $800 million. (http://r.reuters.com/jud39t)

Sinovel officials were not immediately available for comment.

In 2011, AMSC, which mainly supplies electrical systems used in wind turbines, filed several lawsuits in China against Sinovel alleging the illegal use of AMSC's intellectual property.

AMSC, which was formerly known as American Superconductor Corp, said at the time it wanted to recover more than $1.2 billion in damages.

"The fact that Sinovel has exported stolen American intellectual property from China back into the United States - less than 40 miles from our global headquarters - shows not only a blatant disrespect for intellectual property but a disregard for international trade law," AMSC Chief Executive Officer Daniel McGahn said.

AMSC called on President Barack Obama's administration and Congress to re-evaluate the U.S. trade relationship with China.

AMSC said that, over the past two years, more than 500 staff worldwide have lost their jobs following Sinovel's "egregious and unlawful behavior."

The defendants indicted include Su Liying, the deputy director of Sinovel's Research and Development Department, Zhao Haichun, a technology manager for Sinovel and Dejan Karabasevic, a former AMSC employee.

Sinovel, once AMSC's largest customer, contracted with an AMSC employee in Austria to get the software designed for Sinovel's turbines.

"The Sinovel case is a classic example of the growing insider threat facing our nation's corporations and their intellectual property," said FBI Executive Assistant Director Richard McFeely.

AMSC shares were up as much as 7 percent in extended trading.

LG BP730

Blu-ray players have come a long way in a few years. It used to be that $300 would get you a "high-end" Blu-ray player that could load a disc in a minute and maybe access Netflix. Now nearly every Blu-ray player is connected, solid models are available for just over $100 (like our budget Editors' Choice, the Panasonic DMP-BDT230), and midrange models offer remarkably fast speeds. The LG BP730 is a $199.99 (list) Blu-ray player that doesn't just pack a ton of features into its attractive design, but loads discs consistently in less than 20 seconds.

The BP730 is very full-featured, with nearly every bell or whistle you could want for a Blu-ray player?save high-end home theater connections like the second HDMI port, analog surround audio outputs, or RS232C port found on the high-end Editors' Choice Oppo BDP-103. The BP730 supports Blu-ray, has built-in Wi-Fi a/b/g/n for accessing LG's Smart TV apps, and perhaps most interestingly, supports extensive smartphone integration: The player comes with an NFC sticker so you can connect your NCF-enabled smartphone to the player with a tap. LG's remote app can not only control the player and stream content to and from the player, but can turn your smartphone into a wireless headphone device for watching movies quietly.

Design
The Blu-ray player's design is black and angular, measuring 1.6 by 16.9 by 7.8 inches (HWD) and weighing a solid three pounds. It consists of a brushed metallic black top half and a glossy black lower half that holds the controls and display. Instead of a disc tray, the player uses a slot-loading optical drive located on the left half of the player, on the seam between the brushed and glossy black halves. The right half holds on the glossy black part facing up a row of touch-sensitive LED-backlit controls, and on the glossy black part facing forward a blue LED display and a USB port covered by a small door. The back of the player holds a minimum of ports: an HDMI port, an Ethernet port, and an optical audio output.

Remote and Features
Instead of a conventional remote, the BP730 comes with a curved Magic Remote similar to the remotes that come with LG's connected HDTVs. It's dominated by a large navigation pad with a scroll wheel that doubles as a main button, and features only a few other buttons including playback controls and four color buttons. The remote works as a motion controller, moving an on-screen cursor in addition to the standard navigation pad menu item selection. I've complained about LG's Magic Remote in the past because of the scroll wheel doubling as a button, but the scroll wheel on this remote is much stiffer than previous remotes, so I found myself almost never accidentally pinning the wheel with my thumb when pressing the button.

LG's Smart TV system gives the BP730 loads of online content. Not only does it have a wide selection of online services in its Premium menu including Netflix and Hulu Plus, but it has a library of smaller and more specialized apps on top of them. It also features a Web browser that is made easier to use with the on-screen cursor and the Magic Remote, even if typing remains clunky. With DLNA support and app-based remote control and media streaming support for mobile devices, the BP730 can display your media regardless of how you want to access it. The only thing it seems to miss on this front is an SD card slot, though the USB port can be used to access your media that isn't networked.

Performance
The BP730 is blazingly fast. I tested its speed by taking the average load times of three Blu-ray discs (in this case, Piranha, The Amazing Spider-Man, and Black Swan) six times each from inserting the disc to first showing information on the screen. Between the three discs, the BP730 took an average of 15 seconds to start playing, and even the slower-than-usual?Black Swan clocked in at 18.7 seconds, with a particularly sluggish 22.5 load time the first time I put the disc in. For comparison, the Panasonic DMP-BDT230 took an average of 17.3 seconds to load a disc.

We test Blu-ray player video processing with the HQV 2.0 benchmark Blu-ray disc, and the BP730 passed all video tests with flying colors. It handled both 30fps video and 24fps film footage easily, and showed little to no judder or tearing from horizontal motion.

The LG BP730 is a shining example of how far Blu-ray players have come in the last few years. It's loaded with features, takes about 15 seconds to load most discs, and handles any video format you throw at it without processing issues. Since it's missing certain ports and connections, it doesn't quite have the flexibility to integrate into a complicated, high-end home theater system. But at $200 it's easily our new midrange Editors' Choice for Blu-ray players. You can save some money with the Editors' Choice budget Panasonic DMP-BDT230, but the BP730's extra features and slightly quicker performance are worth the extra cash.

How To Find The Right Teacher In Martial Arts | Content for Reprint

Author: Andrew Toth | Total views: 51 Comments: 0
Word Count: 1050 Date:

It goes without saying that not all teachers (of any subject) are equal and that is probably multiplied to the nth degree in the martial arts which doesn't allow for standardization to quite the same degree as other subjects might. There are of course ongoing attempts at standardization and classification but the martial arts are still very much of a melting pot and one is often left wondering who is teaching what and where did it come from.

Enter the beginner?

Given this prodigious output of styles and teachers, how is a beginner, who knows virtually nothing about the martial arts?how is such a person to find the right teacher?

And is that the right question?

Maybe there is no "right" teacher. Maybe the right teacher for me is not the right teacher for you.

So it can get a bit complicated?

But I'm getting ahead of myself here. Questions such as these simply do not arise for most people. They join their neighborhood club, pay their fees, get graded a few times, get a nice colored belt maybe even a trophy or two, tell their friends they are a brown belt in such and such a style and?that is all they want. And I'm not here to argue with that, but?

If you're real serious, if martial arts is your reason for living, you will need to find the Right Teacher and that means that you will have to do some serious searching. Both internally and externally.

Why?

Because the Right Teacher will not appear miraculously on the horizon when you first decide to be the next Bruce Lee. And so, almost by default, beginners tends to think of their first teacher as THE RIGHT TEACHER! Which is understandable because they don't know any better. They have nothing to compare their first teacher to, so the first teacher is THE BEST. The beginner is totally convinced of that.

However, as time moves on the beginner may begin to experience some disquiet. Some things don't add up. The first teacher may be a bit overweight, or not as fit as he could be. Maybe he doesn't answer questions satisfactorily?but hey! nobody's perfect and all things considered the first teacher is still The Best, and that's all there is to it, right? Nonetheless there is talk...there is talk of another teacher down the road who is (blasphemy!) even better. The beginner puts all those preposterous notions aside of course, but...

There are now some cracks in the facade.

Not fatal, but it is through these cracks that the doubts seep in.

That, at least, is what happened to me. I was absolutely convinced that my first teacher was the best, but?I checked out the new teacher down the road (no harm in that, is there?). Then I joined up and started the cycle all over again. And then again and again and again?

I tried judo, ju-jutsu, Hsing-i, Pa-kua, Tai chi, Shaolin and a number of other styles the names of which I now forget. Nothing changed. The teachers were all promising to begin with and, truth be told, they were all quite capable in their own way and I learned a lot from each and every one of them but they were only technicians. They knew the techniques, and that is all they knew. And I wanted more, so I moved on. Just what I wanted I was still not sure of?

An astute reader will now see the obvious. One's Search, one's Quest, is part of one's over-all Training. A very important part. Why?

Because it is all part of a learning curve. You are learning not only new techniques but you are learning something infinitely more important: the Art of Discernment! The Art of separating the wheat from the chaff. The Art of separating the Real from the False?

And yes, it is also the Art of recognizing the Real Teacher when he or she finally appears.

You see, that is the secret. Finding the right teacher is only the half of it. Recognizing them to be such is by far the more difficult and important half.

Let me ask you a question: how often does a student find the right teacher and continue to walk on by and not know the difference?

It happens more often than you might think! I've seen it again and again and again!

The thing to bear in mind is that the Right Teacher may not be (and usually isn't) the Hollywood stereotype. The Right Teacher may be an unassuming little fellow who runs a little corner store, is disarmingly self-effacing and has maybe one or two students who are equally unimpressive. In short this is not really the sort of person who matches your mental image of a deadly warrior. Or he may be crude and rude and obnoxious. And (blasphemy again!) he may not have your best interests at heart!

In other words, not all Masters fit the Hollywood mold! You really do have to keep your wits about you on this because the Right Teacher will confound your expectations nearly every time!

The "secret" then is to keep training, keep looking and to develop the Power of Discernment so that you can see below superficial appearances. (This will stand you in good stead not only in your search for a teacher and but also when you are in a fight!)

There is a saying that when the student is ready, the Teacher will appear. And that will happen when the student has developed a keen sense of discernment.*

*Author's note: by discernment I do not mean cynicism. The "been there, done that" attitude will not help you find a Teacher and if perchance you do, that Teacher will not be interested in teaching you. Real discernment has a quality of humility: you don't know the answer, you don't even know if there is an answer, but you will not stop searching.

Andrew Toth is the author of the book, Shaolin Temple Kung Fu, which is arguably the most advanced book available on the subject of martial arts. It is a must for anyone who is serious about this subject. You can read it HERE

Obama Catholic schools flap: Did he really call for end of religious schools?

Did President Obama just step into political trouble on a new issue, or didn?t he?

Some critics say that remarks made by Mr. Obama on a visit to Northern Ireland this week amount to an assault on schools run by religious sects ? including the Catholic schools that are prominent in the US as well as in Northern Ireland.

But, at a time when the president is under fire on multiple fronts, he also has defenders on this one ? including some within the Roman Catholic Church.

RECOMMENDED: Are you smarter than an atheist? A religious quiz

Here?s what Obama said in remarks about building and maintaining peace across sectarian lines:

?There are still wounds [in Northern Ireland] that haven?t healed, and communities where tensions and mistrust hangs in the air.? A little later he added: ?If towns remain divided ? if Catholics have their schools and buildings, and Protestants have theirs ? if we can?t see ourselves in one another, if fear or resentment are allowed to harden, that encourages division. It discourages cooperation.?

Since he uttered those words in Belfast on June 17, they?ve spawned resentment and opposition in some quarters ? including among some US conservatives and Catholics.

?Catholic education is not the source of ?division? in Northern Ireland, nor are they a source of division anywhere in the world,? wrote Brian Burch, president of the group Catholic Vote. ?Catholic schools educate children without regard for race, class, sex, origin, or even religious faith. The work of Catholic education is a response to the Gospel call to serve, not divide.?

Want your top political issues explained? Get customized DC Decoder updates.

The tiff over Obama?s words comes as the president has been struggling in public-opinion polls lately against a succession of problems, from controversies involving the Internal Revenue Service and citizen privacy to questions about his leadership on issues like health care reform and the conflict in Syria.

Mr. Burch has called on Catholics to sign a petition seeking an apology from Obama. The petition also refers to a ?growing pattern of hostility on the part of this administration toward Catholics,? mentioning as examples aspects of the president?s health care reform law and a Justice Department argument to the Supreme Court against a religious exemption to employment discrimination laws.

But Bill Donahue, president of the Catholic League, has a different take on Obama?s remarks. He says critics have taken the words wildly out of context ? if they?ve paid attention to the words at all.

?There are plenty of reasons to be critical of President Obama?s policies as they relate to the Catholic Church, and I have not been shy in stating them. But the reaction on the part of conservatives, many of whom are Catholic, over his speech in Ireland, is simply insane,? Mr. Donahue said in a Friday blog post.

?Obama was not condemning Catholic schools ? he was condemning segregation,? Donahue wrote. ?He was calling attention to the fact that where social divisions exist, the prospects for social harmony are dimmed. How can anyone reasonable disagree with this observation??

Chinese astronaut teaches 60 million kids from space

A Chinese astronaut gave China its first physics lesson by video from space today, a required lesson for middle schools across the country.

Chinese astronaut Wang Yaping gave a physics lesson by video from a space module orbiting more than 300 km (186 miles) above the earth?on Thursday.

She gulped a globule of water floating in the air, and pushed a fellow astronaut against the module?s wall with a touch of her finger, to illustrate the effects of weightlessness. Then she answered questions from a group of children gathered in a studio in Beijing watching the lesson on live TV.

The scene resembled a similar lesson that US elementary school teacher Barbara Morgan taught from the International Space Station in 2007. But this one had specifically Chinese characteristics.

The questions that the Chinese kids asked?on Thursday?were much like the questions that American kids asked six years ago. Do stars twinkle when you are in space? (No, because there is no atmospheric interference.) Have you seen any UFO?s? (?Not yet? was Ms. Wang?s answer to that one.)

But while Barbara Morgan and her colleagues participated in three low-key sessions with small groups of students in Idaho, Virginia, and Massachusetts, Wang?s class was broadcast nationwide on state TV?s premier channel and 60 million schoolchildren and teachers in 80,000 middle schools watched, according to China?s Education Ministry.

The ministry had ?issued instructions requiring middle schools to adjust their class schedules and organize students to watch? the lesson, according to its website.

The compulsory class reflected the importance that the Chinese government has attached to its ambitious space program. Beijing first sent a human into space only 10 years ago, but plans to build its own space station by 2020.

Beijing has more than just a technological interest in space. A few years ago, just before China launched its first lunar probe, the chief scientist for China's moon program, Ouyang Ziyuan, was blunt about its political purposes.

"Lunar exploration is a reflection of a country's comprehensive national power,? he said in an interview with the official newspaper People's Daily. ?It is significant for raising our international prestige and increasing our people's cohesion."

Karin Kasdin: Forget The Cake. Let Them See Movies!

I once whined to my grandmother who was 90 years old at the time that the cost of feeding my family was escalating faster than our salaries. To this she replied, "Back in the Depression when I was feeding my family you could buy a 10 pound bag of potatoes for a dime. The trouble was, no one had a dime." That shut me up.

But now I am a grandmother and when my children complain about how expensive it is to live, I would be lying if I gave them a similar response. We always had the dime. We even had the dollar. Sadly, our children will need wheelbarrows of money to live the way we did on a comfortable, but not outrageous income. I'm sure they will all be able to own their own homes and eat well, but the cost of leisure activities will be so high, there is a good chance my grandchildren will be culturally deprived.

We babysat for our precious granddaughter last week and spent a day at the zoo. Admission cost us $78. That's because we passed on the carousel, camel and train rides, each of which has its own surcharge. I should have packed a picnic, but ignorant of the admission price, we bought barely edible cold burgers and hot soda for $30. Needless to say, the diversity of the crowd was pitifully low. The zoo used to be a default trip for our family because the son who only loved sports and the son who only loved music and the son who only loved girls, all loved the zoo. Today, there are millions and millions of children who will never see a zebra close up and that makes me sad.

And what about sports? Most young families would have to mortgage their homes or take out home equity loans in order to afford major league tickets. I've seen old film clips of baseball games. The fans didn't all look rich. They looked clean and well-kempt, but not rich. These days you better hope your team sucks so the ticket prices are lower. And that's only baseball. To score football tickets you not only need a vault full of cash, but the connections to help you nab them.

Theater? Fuggedaboutdit. Even half-price tickets to Broadway shows are beyond the means of the middle class.

Rock concerts? In my youth I saw The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Hermit's Hermits (okay, I was 14, give me a break). The cheapest tickets we could score for the Rolling Stones 50th anniversary tour were $300. See ya' Mick!

This week Steven Speilberg and George Lucas predicted movies will cost between $50-$150 dollars in the not-too-distant future. Movies? Are you kidding me? The family outing of choice? We loved taking our kids to the movies. Okay, I wasn't crazy about The Ninja Turtles, but I sat through it without complaint. Is there nothing left for a family to do together?

Perhaps our entertainment moguls might want to reconsider the real cost of excluding a large portion of our population from 90 minutes of escape from reality.

From what I've learned, the price of a ticket is beans compared to the cost in monetary and human terms of revolution.

HTC reportedly inks $12 million ad campaign with Robert Downey Jr.

    Robert Downey Jr,.

HTC has reportedly hired actor Robert Downey Jr. for a 2-year global marketing campaign. The smartphone manufacturer will try to capitalize on the actor's popularity to promote their new devices, such as the beloved HTC One. A bold move like this should come as no surprise. It is no secret that there have been questions about HTC's longevity, with recent employment changes and competition with the behemoth that Samsung has become; though May was its best financial month of 2013.

The deal has not yet been officially announced, but the speculation is that Downey Jr. will have final creative say over the campaign and will not be portraying any characters but himself.

This is a good move by HTC. As good as the HTC One is, Samsung has been pouring money into marketing, which has been effective. The more HTC can brand itself and capture the public's attention, the better off they will be. An actor of Robert Downey Jr.'s caliber will help them do just that.

Thousands rally for Egypt's Islamist president

CAIRO (AP) ? At least 10,000 supporters of Egypt's Islamist president have gathered outside a mosque near Cairo's presidential palace in a show of force by his backers.

The rally comes days before mass protests planned by the opposition against Mohammed Morsi, who will be marking his first year ads president end of the month.

Protesters held signs reading, "Islam is the solution," a well-known Muslim Brotherhood slogan.

The Friday demonstration was called "1 million people rally against violence." The crowd was expected to swell to much larger numbers as Morsi's Brotherhood tries to show that he still enjoys popularity in the street.

The rally comes one day after organizers of an anti-Morsi petition drive announced that they hit the target of 15 million signatures demanding Morsi's ouster.

Web 3.0 Semantics | Mao Marketing

This article covers the 2nd part of our look into Web 3.0 technologies. Last time we saw an example of how the web is infiltrating everyday objects; now, we will be investigating Semantics, the other aspect of Web 3.0 technology. Semantic technology provides computers an understanding of language. This understanding of language has made possible two technologies, semantic search and the personal digital assistant.

    Semantic Search

Semantic search is when a search engine has the ability to recognize the relationships between words; for example, the words restaurant and eatery both represent a place where people eat. Google, which has been using semantic search technology for a while now, will actually provide the same sort of results when asked to perform a search on either a restaurant or eatery; ?in other-words, Google is searching the web based on the user?s intent, instead of merely word matching the user?s search query with the words found on web pages.

    The Personal Digital Assistant

A ?Personal Digital Assistant is a computer application, that combines other applications, such as email, instant messaging, calendar , GPS, etc into a unified interface. The most well known of these assistants is Apple?s Siri, which was released in late 2011. In case you haven?t seen Siri in action, you can watch the below video to get an idea of what Siri is all about.

As demonstrated in the above video, it is important to realize that applications such as Siri now have the ability to promote local businesses. In the case of Siri, this is accomplished via online sources such as Yelp.ca; in other words, Siri will be promoting your business to potential customers. Before getting too excited, you must be aware that if your business does not have an appropriate online presence, Siri will not be aware of your existence.

In closing, this exciting tech is only possible, because software has gained the ability to understand what the user is asking about, which is what semantic technology is all about.

Ad Giant WPP Takes Stake In Muzy, A Mobile Microblogging Startup With 20M Users

muzyWPP, the advertising giant, is taking another step into the world of startup investments, this time specifically in mobile and social media. It is taking a stake in Muzy, a Pinterest-style social media platform that lets users incorporate links to images, games, text and more, which they then share with their friends, or with the world at large. The site has some 20 million users and is adding 1 million each month. Terms of the investment were not disclosed but we are trying to find out. That growth, however, and the facts that Muzy is social and mobile, are three indications of why WPP took an interest in the site. Muzy, founded in 2011 and based in San Francisco, was founded by Andrew Chen (CEO) and Matt Rubens (CTO). Chen had also held positions at Mohr Davidow Ventures and Revenue Science, while Rubens, an engineer, has worked at Amazon.com, among other places. According to a release, the company will be using the funding to staff up — it currently employs less than 10 people — and “build out the suite of creative publishing tools for the Muzy platform.” At the moment, when you go to the site, you can choose from some 50 widgets to publish content into your page. It’s this app-within-app facility that sets Muzy apart from other platforms focused on content creation and self-expression, and could be one way for the company to differentiate longer term. It could also be a way for WPP to potentially look at ways of monetizing. You can imagine, for example, widgets or channels getting sponsored by brands, not to mention pages themselves. In an age where users are getting increasingly desensitized to display advertising online, you can see how new formats like these will continue to be tested out as ways of getting users to engage with marketing (as a way, also, of financing sites like these). WPP has developed something of a track record in making strategic investments into digital, specifically mobile and other emerging areas, as a way of shoring up against larger trends in the industry away from more traditional forms of media like print. Following where the consumer masses (and their eyeballs) are going, WPP has taken stakes in e-commerce sites like MySupermarket ($10 million in April 2012); and more straight media plays, such as yesterday’s news, a stake in Fullscreen (undisclosed amount). Orders top $100 billion as Ryanair gives Boeing a boost

By Alwyn Scott and Maria Sheahan

PARIS (Reuters) - Orders at the Paris Airshow surpassed $100 billion on Wednesday, as planemakers Boeing and Airbus cashed in on demand for fuel-efficient jets and growth in both budget carriers and emerging markets.

Ryanair, Europe's biggest low-cost airline, finalized an order for 175 Boeing 737-800 aircraft worth around $15.6 billion at list prices on day three of the aerospace industry's showcase event, the largest single order ever placed by a European airline with the U.S. group.

Ryanair Chief Executive Michael O'Leary said he was also working on an order for 200 or more of Boeing's next-generation 737 MAX planes that could be concluded this year, potentially worth around $20 billion at list prices.

Not to be overshadowed, Airbus sealed a long-awaited order for 25 of its lightweight, wide-body A350 planes from Air France-KLM worth $7.2 billion at list prices, as previously reported by Reuters.

It also firmed up a deal worth $8.6 billion for 30 more A350-900s from Singapore Airlines, taking the total on order from the carrier to 70.

The A350, which made its maiden flight on Friday, is Airbus' answer to Boeing's popular carbon-composite 787 Dreamliner, and the battle between the two models has been a key feature of the Paris show as the planemakers jostle to meet soaring demand for air travel in emerging markets, especially Asia and the Middle East.

"This show is about wide-bodies," said Kelly Ortberg, president of Rockwell Collins, which supplies major systems to the 787 and A350. "And really good news for wide-bodies."

Boeing bagged nearly $30 billion in orders as it launched the 787-10 on Tuesday, a stretched variant of its high-tech Dreamliner.

Wednesday's dealmaking took the order count for the show so far to more than $100 billion at list prices, although many of the agreements were provisional and most sizable deals are struck at a significant discount.

Nonetheless, the activity confirmed plenty of work for civil aircraft manufacturers for years to come.

    AHEAD OF SCHEDULE

Ryanair's O'Leary said the planned purchase of Boeing 737 MAX jets later this year would be "all growth" and not replacements for aircraft currently in its all-Boeing fleet.

If the order was not at least 200 planes, "it wouldn't be worth doing," he added, in typically forthright style.

But some analysts took this with a pinch of salt. While Ryanair could afford to use a large MAX order to expand, it is not under pressure to buy next-generation jets, said Espirito Santo analyst Gerald Khoo, and will likely wait until prices are at a cyclical bottom to get the best deal.

The 737 MAX is Boeing's answer to the Airbus A320neo, a new version of the European planemaker's best-selling model.

Boeing earlier on Wednesday moved forward by six months the date of the plane's planned entry into service, saying it would be in the third quarter of 2017, almost two years after the A320neo.

O'Leary said a senior team from Boeing and Ryanair was working on a 737 MAX order and that the airline was giving serious consideration to rival Airbus' A320neo jet, though Ryanair has not purchased any Airbus jets and the European planemaker has repeatedly dampened the idea.

"We're hopeful that we can reach agreement on price of a MAX order sometime before the end of the year," O'Leary said, adding that the 737 MAX offered better fuel economy than the A320neo and room for nine extra seats.

O'Leary said he was interested in launching a transatlantic, low-cost airline, but that there was no opportunity for a significantly sized operation until Boeing and Airbus had worked through their delivery backlog for wide-body jets.

Airbus also clinched an order for six A330-300 aircraft and commitments to buy four A350-900s from SriLankan Airlines on Wednesday in a deal worth $2.6 billion at list prices.
