(AP) ? Boy, did Drew Brees lay an egg against the Atlanta Falcons.

Five interceptions for the first time in his career.

The end of his NFL-record touchdown streak.

And a timing mistake that cost the Saints dearly.

The Falcons raced to a 17-0 lead, then turned to their defense to make it stand up. The result was a 23-13 victory Thursday night that pushed Atlanta to the brink of a division championship and may have finished off the Saints' fading hopes.

"Five interceptions against one of the greatest quarterbacks ever to play the game," said Falcons cornerback Dunta Robinson. "That's an amazing feeling."

Brees had thrown a touchdown pass in 54 consecutive games, eclipsing Johnny Unitas' longstanding record earlier in the season.

"I can't lie," said safety William Moore, who had two of Atlanta's interceptions. "We didn't even know about it."

All the Falcons (11-1) cared about was beating their biggest rival and a nemesis in recent years. New Orleans (5-7) had won four in a row and 11 of 13, the bitter feelings in the series epitomized by the reception the Saints got at the Atlanta airport.

Their bus was pelted by eggs.

Brees looked like he was playing on egg shells at the Georgia Dome.

"That's the first time that's ever happened to me, so that's extremely disappointing," he said. "I pride myself on being a good decision-maker and not someone who will be a detriment to the game."

Michael Turner scored on Atlanta's opening possession, Tony Gonzalez hauled in a touchdown pass from Matt Ryan, and Matt Bryant booted three field goals, including a 55-yarder.

The defense did the rest. Thomas DeCoud, Sean Weatherspoon and Jonathan Babineaux also had interceptions, and another pick by Corey Peters didn't count because of a penalty. The performance was even more impressive considering the Falcons' best cover cornerback, Asante Samuel, left the game in the first quarter after aggravating a right shoulder injury.

"We got the monkey off our back," DeCoud said.

The Falcons will clinch the NFC South with a month to go if Tampa Bay loses at Denver on Sunday.

Brees threw an apparent scoring pass to Darren Sproles late in the first half, but it was nullified by a penalty. Then, with 12 seconds remaining in the half, Brees dumped a pass over the middle to Sproles with no timeouts. He was wrapped up at the Atlanta 3 and the clock ran out before the Saints could spike the ball to try a field goal.

A rookie-like mistake.

"Honestly, I thought we had more time than we did," Brees said. "The last time I remember, we had 17 seconds. ... But it was down to 7 when I looked up after the completion. That wasn't enough time to get the spike. That's on me."

Another possible TD pass went through the hands of Lance Moore early in the third, forcing the Saints to settle for a field goal that made it 17-10.

Four days earlier, Brees had two passes picked off and returned for touchdowns in a loss to San Francisco.

This one was even worse. He finished 28 of 50 for 341 yards but had a rating of just 37.6, the third-lowest off his career.

After winning so many close games, the Falcons started this one as if they were intent on routing the only team to beat them this season. New Orleans knocked off Atlanta 31-27 at the Superdome on Nov. 11, the bright spot in a tumultuous year that was marred by a bounty scandal and a season-long suspension for coach Sean Payton.

Ryan completed a pass on the first play from scrimmage before turning it over to a running game that has struggled most of the season. Turner burst around right end for a 35-yard gain. Jacquizz Rodgers broke off two straight 14-yard gains. Finally, it was Turner going in standing from 3 yards out, giving Atlanta a quick 7-0 lead.

That was Turner's 58th touchdown in five seasons with the Falcons, breaking the team record he had shared with Terance Mathis.

Atlanta struck again in the opening minute of the second period. Ryan threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Gonzalez in the back of the end zone, taking advantage of the matchup with their former teammate, linebacker Curtis Lofton.

Brees' second interception, this one a sloppy pass behind running Chris Ivory that deflected into the arms of Weatherspoon, set up Bryant's 45-yard field goal for a 17-0 lead.

Then, suddenly, the game completely changed.

For the rest of the second quarter and most of the third, the Saints totally dominated. Mark Ingram scored on a 1-yard run, capping an 11-play, 80-yard drive.

After squandering that long drive at the end of the half, Brees got the ball to start the third quarter and went back to work. He made a couple of nifty moves to avoid sacks, completing six passes on an 83-yard drive consuming 15 plays and more than 6? minutes. But the Falcons held again, forcing Garrett Hartley to boot a 21-yard field goal that cut it to 17-10.

Hartley connected from 52 yards on the Saints' next possession to make it even closer.

The Falcons failed to pick up a first down on five straight possessions, a stretch in which the Saints had a 289-30 lead in total yards and a staggering 18 first downs.

But the Atlanta defense kept coming through when it counted.

Late in the third, Brees rolled to his right and threw over the middle. Moore stepped in front of the receiver and returned it to the New Orleans 41. Ryan connected on first-down throws to Gonzalez and Roddy White to set up Bryant for a 29-yarder that extended the lead back to a touchdown.

Moore made another pick in the closing minutes to seal the victory.

NOTES: Brees had two previous games with four interceptions. ... Turner ran 12 times for 83 yards. ... Lance Moore of the Saints hauled in 11 passes for 123 yards.

Sony unveils price, footage for PMW-F55 and PMW-F5 CinaAlta 4K camcorders

Looking for a hearty new camera rig to spice up your next indie film? Start saving: Sony finally went live with pricing for its PMW-F5 and PMW-F55 CineAlta PL-mount cameras. Following an LA screening of professionally shot 4K and HD footage, Sony mentioned that the high-end camcorders can be had for $34,900 and $19,400, respectively. The steeper priced PMW-F55 has a sharper edge, of course, and can natively shoot 4K, 2K or HD footage through a global shutter. The (comparatively) less expensive F5 can handle 4K video too, but needs the help of the AXS-R5 RAW recorder (a $6,300 add-on) to pull it off -- it also has a narrower color gamut and a rolling shutter. Roll on past the break for a full list of prices and accessories.

Participating at these forums, with your email signature that has your website, can help you generate some targeted traffic for your site. Petraeus scandal: Tampa socialite fighting back

Tampa socialite Jill Kelley is fighting back. Today, sources close to the woman who was caught in the media crossfire during the David Petraeus sex scandal have released new letters aimed at reclaiming her reputation.

In a letter released to reporters by Jill Kelley's spokesperson, Kelley's attorney goes after a New York businessman who claimed Kelley was using her connections to Petraeus to broker a deal with the South Korean government.

"It is impossible to overlook your attempt to get your '15 minutes of fame,'" attorney Abbe Lowell wrote to Adam Victor, the president and CEO of TransGas Development Systems. "?You have the right to do that to yourself, but you do not have the right to defame our client.

"This letter is notice to you that statements you have made are false and defamatory and are intended to portray Ms. Kelley in a false light," the letter continued.

Click Here to Read Past Blotter Coverage: Jill Kelley Emails Show Her Eager to Make Multi-Billion Dollar Deal

Victor has claimed that Kelley asked for $80 million in commissions to arrange a deal between Victor and the South Korean government. Kelley was an honorary consul for the Republic of South Korean.

"While it is certainly true that Ms. Kelley communicated with you about a potential business deal, it has nothing to do with General Petraeus or other military," Lowell wrote Victor.

Kelley was stripped of her ceremonial position as honorary consul for South Korea today, according to South Korean Deputy Foreign Minister Kim Kyou-hyun.

"It is not suitable to the status of honorary consul that [she] sought to be involved in commercial projects and peddle influence," Kyou-hyun told South Korea's semi-official Yonhap News Agency.

The dealings between Jill Kelley and Adam Victor were detailed in a series of emails between the two made public earlier this month. The emails appeared to confirm the New York businessman's claim that Kelley wanted a huge fee for brokering a transaction with the South Korean government.

But in his letter to Victor, Lowell denies that Kelley wanted anything close to $80 million, and says the full chain of emails reveal that "it was you (Victor) who were trying to capitalize on her contacts, and not the other way around."

Kelley and Victor were introduced at the Republican National Convention in Tampa in August by Kelley's friend, Tampa real estate developer Don Phillips. In an interview with ABC News, Phillips said he suggested that Kelley and Victor should meet because Kelley could help Victor land a deal for a coal gasification plant in South Korea.

Phillips claimed that Kelley said that Victor tried to "proposition" her "almost immediately," and said he had to cajole her into flying to New York for a second meeting with Victor.

After she met with Victor in New York, Phillips said, Kelley reported that she was no longer interested in pursuing the deal. According to Phillips, she said, "As a result of my personal investigations and business intelligence this is just not going anywhere, Don, and you just don't want to associate with this guy."

Victor, who denies propositioning Kelley, claimed she continued pushing for the deal after their meeting in New York. But sources close to Kelley say that telephone voice messages Victor left for Kelley reveal that he was the one who continued to seek Kelley's involvement, even after the Petraeus affair came to light.

Victor also claims that Kelley told him Petraeus arranged for her to be named honorary consul, and that she could use her connections with high-level Korean officials to help land the coal plant deal.

None of the emails that Victor showed to ABC News mention Petraeus. Kelley's friend Don Phillips told ABC News that Kelley has not "in any way tried to profit" from her relationship with Petraeus.

Sources close to Kelley also say a complaint about Kelley's former attorney was filed with the Florida Consumer Assistance Program, charging that he may have violated attorney-client privilege by holding a news conference and speaking about Kelley.

In addition, a letter from Kelley's lawyer was dispatched to the Department of Justice, asking if there will be an investigation of how his clients' names leaked to the media.

Victor told ABC News he has not yet received the letter that was released to selected reporters this evening, but after being told of its contents Victor said it appears to be a frivolous complaint.

"I don't know what they're upset about. I've said nothing derogatory about Ms. Kelley and have only told the facts as I know them, in fact much of what I've said was complimentary," Victor said.

As to charges of inappropriate behavior, Victor said he was mystified. He told ABC News he had only met Kelley in the presence of his female chief of staff and received gracious follow emails from Kelley afterwards.

Victor said he did indeed contact Kelley after the Petraeus scandal broke, but mainly to find out what was going on.

Requests for comment from the Kelleys' Florida attorney were not immediately returned.

Grassley office: Leahy working behind closed doors on privacy bill

Iowa Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley?s office leveled charges of working behind closed doors at Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman?Patrick Leahy and his office following?allegations and denials?that he is aiming to allow law enforcement?s push for warrantless surveillance.

Leahy?s office first used Twitter and his?website to hit back against criticism following a Tuesday CNET?report?about the senator?s proposed?amendment?to a bill affecting two 1980s-era surveillance bills ? the?1988 Video Privacy Protection Act, and the 1986 Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA).

Now Grassley, the committee ranking member, is charging that his office has been kept in the dark regarding the development of the bill.

Grassley spokeswoman Beth Levine told The Daily Caller on Wednesday that neither ?Sen. Grassley nor his staff have seen the new legislation proposed by Sen. Leahy,? stating that the bill is being rewritten ?behind closed doors.?

?But, judging by the concerns on both sides of the issue, it may be time to take a step back, hold additional hearings to address concerns, and discuss the issues being raised instead of rewriting the bill behind closed doors,? she added.

The 1988 Video Privacy Protection Act was first crafted to prevent the ?wrongful disclosure of video tape rental or sales records.? The privacy protections applied to email, telephone and electronically stored data via ECPA, and were subsequently amended and weakened by various acts, including the Patriot Act.

Leahy first announced his effort to reform ECPA over two years ago, and introduced his ECPA amendment in the spring of 2011 to guarantee user privacy protections in the face of rapid communications technology innovation.

Law enforcement, afraid of losing the ability to monitor and track the digital communications of suspects and criminals, is asking lawmakers for broader surveillance capabilities.

Leahy?s office did not respond to TheDC?s request for further comment about who the senator has been working with on the issue.

A Senate Judiciary Committee aide, however, told TheDC that Leahy and his staff have had, and continue to have, discussions with various stakeholders in the privacy community, law enforcement ?and many others.?

Leahy has also held?at least two hearings on the issue since he first introduced the bill.

Despite Leahy?s calls for bipartisan and engagement on ECPA reform, Grassley?s office maintained that Leahy?s staff were non-responsive to their attempts to reach out to Leahy staffers to address concerns.

?Sen. Grassley?s staff reached out to Chairman Leahy?s staff a couple times since the September business meeting of the committee to address the?concerns with the ECPA provisions before the chairman again brought up the bill for committee consideration, but they were not responsive,? Levine said.

?This process of working behind closed doors is a big problem and not the solution given such a complex issue with so many equities on the topic,? she said.

A Dog Named Leaf -- Strange, Mysterious, Wonderful

A Dog Named Leaf -- Strange, Mysterious, Wonderful

EXCERPTS FROM REVIEWS ON AMAZON.COM

?I couldn?t put the book down. The trials so honestly written by the author will touch your heart. The story of Leaf?s journey and healing will amaze you; not too heavy; there?s humor, but it?s a journey which will inspire you and touch your heart at the courage, love, and experiences of the author and his wonderful dog. It?s very special.?

?Marcia

?5.0 out of 5 stars. This book is to be shared ? buy two, as you will certainly want to give one as a gift! A DOG NAMED LEAF truly touched my heart. Allen helps us to see that there is so much more going on in our relationships with our animal companions. I hope it will help others to be more aware of this incredible love bond between Souls and to also help us respect one another more. THANK YOU, Allen! I love this book! Great for all who have dogs or anyone who has furry or feathered friends!

?Misha?s Mom

?It is a compelling, engaging, mesmerizing true story. ? This book is packed with day-to-day, moment-to-moment experiences between Allen, Linda, and Leaf, demonstrating the animal-human spiritual bond. The similarities between the challenges both Leaf and Allen face are astounding? The Andersons are on to something. The bond is real. My husband is now reading my copy of the book. Well written. Highly recommended.?

?Dorothy Weiss

?I love Leaf, Allen, and Linda. This book is so beautifully written. I couldn?t put it down. Allen is so brave to have shared his journey to health with us. Leaf is truly an amazing dog (Soul). I would recommend this book to anyone. I was inspired to look at all pets, including my cat Angel, with even more respect and insight into their ability to help their humans be more open to love and guidance.?

?Sheila B.

?5.0 out of 5 stars. Transcends the Pet-Animal Story Genre by Leaps and Bounds. I finished this book in two sittings. It?s a page-turner. It?s about every day life in its most usual aspects ? making a living and partnering with your spouse. But it?s also about how the past weaves seamlessly with the future to make you whole. It?s also about life and death ? enduring a life-threatening illness and having to go way beyond preconceived limits of patience and stamina.

?However, the heart of this story is where the golden nugget lies. What you read bypasses the mind completely and rings a bell deep inside you. You ask yourself: Could this really happen? For some, the events described may strain credulity. However, author Allen Anderson brings you step-by-step into the shared world of man and dog in a way that directly addresses the most spiritual part of ourselves.

?And it transcends the pet/animal ? human connection books that are plentiful on the market. What you see unfolding is a special inner and outer weaving of events by both human and animal that most of us aren?t aware of.

?I finished the book and wondered: What do animals really KNOW? Are they doing these kinds of things all the time? Who ARE they, really? And it makes you wonder if you can discover these invisible

connections in your own life.

?This isn?t another story of a warm-hearted friendship between a man and his dog ? though it is this too. This is about how a dog ? with great love ?actually entered the inner reality of his friend to help save him ? and was able to succeed where human explanations and efforts failed. Quite a coup for a little four-legged creature who was once abandoned, and then found by this remarkable author.?

Dean Jayson: How Windows 8 Could Save Microsoft's Online Advertising Business

The press has called the launch of Windows 8 a "defining moment" for Microsoft as it struggles to transition to the new generation of mobile computing. The media, as well as Microsoft shareholders, are closely watching the launch and rightly so. The Windows Division is a cornerstone of Microsoft's business model, responsible for 31 percent of the company's profit in the third quarter. It's assumed that Microsoft must protect the Windows business if it's to survive.

The success of Windows 8 would not only defend the lucrative Windows Division, it could rescue another hugely important division of Microsoft business: online advertising. That business, known as the Online Services Division (OSD) comprised of Bing, MSN network, Atlas and Hotmail, has been a disaster. The division is most notorious for the ill-advised purchase of aQuantive advertising firm, a $6.2 billion blunder Microsoft wrote off this year. That aside, OSD continuously weighs down Microsoft. In the third quarter it operated at a loss of $364 million compared to the Windows Division profit of $1.6 billion. OSD was the only Microsoft division to operate at a loss in the third quarter.

Microsoft's opportunity to turnaround its struggling advertising business lies within the new Windows 8 interface, known as Metro. The Metro interface does away with the old-school Windows icons and replaces them with web-connected "tiles" that dynamically pull in updates for things like weather, news, social and email. These tiles amount to desktop apps that, just like mobile apps, can be ad supported. Google, Netflix and The New York Times are among 9,000 companies that have already built desktop web apps for Windows 8. As the owner of the app store (called Microsoft Windows Store), Microsoft, like Apple, has implemented a 70:30 revenue share with developers. Microsoft hopes it can parlay Windows 8 penetration of the PC market into a position of strength in the online ad market.

For that strategy to pay off, Windows 8 must replace web browsing with dedicated apps. That's exactly what happened in mobile computing and Apple turned that into a healthy business -- reportedly paying out $2.5 billion to developers in 2011. The good news for Microsoft is that the PC app market may turn out to be a bigger business. Time spent with PC accounts for 26 percent of a consumer's time compared to 10 percent for mobile, creating a bigger inventory set.

The app-based interface of Windows 8 is also a key component of Microsoft's strategy to combat Apple and Google in the mobile and tablet market. If consumers download desktop apps for their Windows 8 PCs, they may want them available on other devices, boosting the appeal of Windows 8 phones and tablets. If Windows 8 is a success, Microsoft advertising business could become the company's newest bright spot, instead of its perennial black eye.

Chris Weidman out, Costa Phillipou in against Tim Boetsch at UFC 155

According to Newsday, Chris Weidman is out of UFC 155 with an injury. Costa Phillipou, whose UFC 154 bout was canceled at the last minute because of opponent Nick Ring's illness, will step in to fight Tim Boetsch.

Weidman is one of the top contenders at middleweight. He is undefeated, and has recent wins over Demian Maia and Mark Munoz.

This injury is the second blow to Weidman in the past month. His home in Long Island was severely damaged by Hurricane Sandy. Though no one in his family was injured, much of the house was wrecked.

Amazon Offers 'Amazon Pages' For Brands To Customize With Their ...

Just in time for the holiday shopping blitz, it looks like Amazon is opening a new chapter in its role as an online marketplace for third-parties to sell their goods. The company is quietly pushing a service called Amazon Pages, which lets companies set up their own pages on Amazon.com as ?custom destinations,? complete with www.amazon.com/brandname URLs and dynamic designs with large photos and social media links. Along with this, it is also offering Amazon Posts for companies to market themselves across Amazon and Facebook, and Amazon Analytics to measure how well all of the above is working.

The analytics are limited currently to how well brands? Amazon-led efforts are performing, but there isn?t really anything stopping the company from offering the same kind of measurements to brands for their positioning across the wider internet ? putting Amazon in closer quarters against the likes of Salesforce and Oracle in the process.

The bigger effort around pages, meanwhile, gives Amazon a significant leg up in its positioning brands and smaller businesses that might potentially look to Amazon as a way of running their full online operation, in place of their own standalone websites. The fact that there are URLs involved here also gives another intriguing twist to the news from many months ago about Amazon filing for dozens of generic new TLD names like ?.buy?, ?.group?, ?.room? and ?.shop?.

The initiative comes from the company?s Amazon Marketing Services division, which has also posted a PDF taking people through the process of working with the three features. That PDF guide was only created and posted yesterday.

We have reached out to Amazon to ask about these services.

In the meantime, here is what we see on the site:

The Pages feature lets brands, businesses and individuals register their own pages on Amazon, and it provides them with templates to create their storefronts. These let brands register amazon pages customized with their own names (for example http://www.amazon.com/techcrunch). Amazon Pages looks more dynamic than what you get at the moment: companies can include more photography, including ?hero? large images (two examples illustrated here), buttons to Facebook and Twitter pages, and ?merchandizing widgets? that let you select and place links to specific products of yours or others offered through Amazon.

Amazon Posts, meanwhile, is a foray into social marketing. Creators of Amazon Pages can use it to update their sites with new messages, and Amazon lets users cross-post those messages to Facebook pages as well. Think of it as a kind of HootSuite-lite, with the ability to schedule updates and cross-post messages in a couple of places. ?You can enhance your words with an image or a product. And you can plan ahead, scheduling the release of a series of posts on successive days,? Amazon writes. For now, Posts looks like it is limited to Facebook and Amazon itself but given that Twitter is also included in the Pages social widgets, you could see this also getting added to the mix.

Less clear is where sites like Pinterest and Fancy ? which are more closely aligned with Amazon?s marketplace, product-focused aesthetic ? might fit into the mix.

Finally, the analytics piece plays on Amazon?s position as a big data powerhouse in its own right: here the company is offering a dashboard for companies to monitor how well their Pages and Posts are performing, covering areas like reach, view and purchase lift, to help ?demystify the impact of social marketing,? according to the company.

Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN), is a leading global Internet company and one of the most trafficked Internet retail destinations worldwide. Amazon is one of the first companies to sell products deep into the long tail by housing them in numerous warehouses and distributing products from many partner companies. Amazon directly sells or acts as a platform for the sale of a broad range of products. These include books, music, videos, consumer electronics, clothing and household products. The majority of Amazon?s...

S.Africa's Telkom says H1 profits tumble

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Telkom SA, South Africa's struggling fixed-line operator, reported an 80 percent drop in first-half profit on Monday, hit by a $55 million regulatory penalty and weaker revenue.

Telkom, which has been hurt by declining demand for fixed-line services and regular departures of top management, said diluted headline earnings per share totalled 37.2 cents in the six months to end-September, from 177.8 cents a year earlier.

Headline EPS, the main measure of profit in South Africa, excludes certain one-time items.

The company previously said it expected a sharp fall in earnings.

Telkom said it was squeezed by lower revenue and from money set aside to pay a $55 million fine from South Africa's competition regulator.

The regulator ruled in August that Telkom had used its dominant market position to "bully" competitors.

Revenue totalled 16.5 billion rand, down from 16.7 billion a year earlier.

Telkom's chief executive said this month she would step down next year, becoming the fifth chief executive to leave the company in about seven years.

South Africa's government owns about 40 percent in Telkom directly and a further 10.5 percent through its state pension fund.

Shares of Telkom are down 47 percent this year, compared with a 15 percent rise in the All-Share index.

Nanomedicine breakthrough could improve chemotherapy for childhood cancer

ScienceDaily (Nov. 20, 2012) ? In a world-first, researchers from the Australian Centre for Nanomedicine at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney have developed a nanoparticle that could improve the effectiveness of chemotherapy for neuroblastoma by a factor of five.

Neuroblastoma is an aggressive childhood cancer that often leaves survivors with lingering health problems due to the high doses of chemotherapy drugs required for treatment. Anything that can potentially reduce these doses is considered an important development.

The UNSW researchers developed a non-toxic nanoparticle that can deliver and release nitric oxide (NO) to specific cancer cells in the body. The findings of their in vitro experiments have been published in the journal Chemical Communications.

"When we injected the chemo drug into the neuroblastoma cells that had been pre-treated with our new nitric oxide nanoparticle we needed only one-fifth the dose," says co-author Dr Cyrille Boyer from the School of Chemical Engineering at UNSW.

"By increasing the effectiveness of these chemotherapy drugs by a factor of five, we could significantly decrease the detrimental side-effects to healthy cells and surrounding tissue."

This synergistic effect between nitric oxide and chemotherapy drugs had previously been reported in other cancer cell lines, but the delivery compounds were potentially toxic and had very poor stability, or shelf life.

In contrast, the UNSW-developed nanoparticle is non-toxic and has a shelf life that has been extended from two days to more than two weeks: "Drug storage is critical and this is a substantial improvement over previous nitric oxide-carrier compounds," says Boyer.

Nitric Oxide is an important cellular signalling molecule involved in many physical and mental processes, and deficiencies have been associated with heightened susceptibility to cancer, liver fibrosis, diabetes, cardiovascular illnesses and neurodegenerative diseases.

"If we can restore nitric oxide with these nanoparticles this could have implications for all the illnesses associated with NO deficiencies, including diabetes and neurodegenerative," he says.

The key medical challenge, says Boyer, has been figuring out a way to deliver appropriate doses to specific sites within the body, without provoking an adverse reaction. The Australian Centre for Nanomedicine -- which crosses science, engineering and medicine -- is investigating multi-disciplinary solutions.

Boyer says that while biologists have experimented with nitric oxide, mixing it with cancer cells and observing the reactions, "no one has tried to develop a platform to specifically deliver nitric oxide -- that is, where you want it, when you want it."

The next step is to test the nanoparticle on other cell lines, such as lung and colon cancer cells, and to proceed to in vivo tests. The team also included researchers from the Children's Cancer Institute Australia based at UNSW's Lowy Cancer Research Centre.

New agency ready to take over southwest La. health, disabilities ...

LAKE CHARLES -- The head of a new agency to run behavioral health and developmental disabilities services in southwest Louisiana says the Imperial Calcasieu Human Service Authority will be able to tailor programs to local needs.

The board's eight members have been preparing since September 2010 to take over control of those services in five parishes, The American Press reported.

A 2008 law set up such boards around Louisiana.

Imperial Calcasieu's 100 employees will all remain state workers, in state buildings, executive director Tanya McGee said. "The only thing that changes is that the control will be local," she said.

The new agency will bring under one roof the Department of Health and Hospitals offices that oversee addictive disorders, mental health and residents with disabilities. Its budget will be about $13 million.

DHH will relinquish full control over behavior health and developmental disabilities services employees and money in July 2013.

"As our own legal entity we will also be able to obtain funds from other sources through grants and partnerships," McGee said. "People need to understand, our same core services provided through DHH in past years will remain the same."

Latin America pledges support for Iberia, warns on austerity

CADIZ, Spain (Reuters) - Latin America on Saturday pledged investment opportunities for recession-hit Spanish and Portuguese companies but warned its former colonial masters drastic cost cutting would only deepen their misery.

The economic plight of Iberia dominated a two-day summit of leaders from Spain, Portugal and Latin America in the southern Spanish city of Cadiz - a principle port for Spanish galleons loaded with riches in the days of empire.

In a reversal of fortune, Spain and Portugal are now banking on Latin American markets to get them on the road to recovery.

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff was the star of the meeting because of hopes consumer demand and public building projects in her country's $2.5 trillion economy will create opportunities for Iberian companies, from energy to retail.

"We have also been hit by the crisis because of the slowdown in international markets but we are widening public and private investment in infrastructure," Rousseff told fellow leaders at the summit, which ends on Saturday.

Latin American countries are all too familiar with the type of fiscal crisis that Portugal and Spain are now going through.

Over past decades they went through boom-and-bust cycles, and devaluations and austerity programmes monitored by the International Monetary Fund.

"Don't commit the same errors we did," said Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa, warning austerity may worsen recession.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Spanish tycoons built up business empires in Latin America in what is known as the "Reconquest."

Spain's biggest companies, from banking groups Santander and BBVA to technology firm Indra and Telefonica, are increasingly dependent on Latin American revenue as domestic operations slump.

Angel Gurria, secretary general of the OECD group of wealthy nations, said Latin America has new opportunities for Spanish investment in infrastructure, technology and education.

But Latin America also holds risks for Iberian firms.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said Spanish companies needed an environment of legal certainty in Latin America, referring to nationalisations in Venezuela and Argentina.

Argentine President Cristina Fernandez did not attend the summit this year, which takes place during a dispute over Argentina's nationalization in April of YPF, a unit of Spanish oil major Repsol.

Leaders of Venezuela, Paraguay, Uruguay, Guatemala, Cuba and Nicaragua were also absent. Still, attendance at this year's summit was better than last year when only half of the members showed up, raising serious questions over the event's relevance.

CONTRASTING FORTUNES

Portugal was rescued last year by Europe after it risked defaulting on public debt and now Spain - the euro zone's fourth biggest economy - is on the brink of needing aid. They are both in deep recession, while Latin America is seen growing 3.2 percent this year by the OECD and more robustly in 2013.

A quarter of the Spanish workforce is jobless. Hundreds of thousands of workers and unemployed marched on Wednesday in both countries protesting budget cuts.

Ecuadoreans, Bolivians and Colombians flocked to Spain during a building bubble that imploded in 2008, leaving the country littered with empty apartment buildings and underused airports and highways.

Now some of those immigrants have headed home and a growing number of Spaniards are seeking their fortune in Latin America.

Suu Kyi Accused of Allying with Military Regime

?

Nov-17-2012 10:57printcomments

No leader for peace or saving lives, Suu Kyi's popularity continues to plummet.

Aung San Suu Kyi

(LONDON The Independent) - Accusing Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi of being an "ally" of the military regime, an opposition party in Myanmar has asked the world investors not to engage in any investment with the present dispensation until a "genuine democratic government" is elected.

"Aung San Suu Kyi has made a U-turn and now she is an ally, collaborator and mouthpiece of the military regime. She has become a coalition partner of the military Junta. It is not correct to call her as a democracy opposition leader or icon or activist," Bo Aung Din, Chairman of the Parliamentary Democracy Party (PDP-Burma), said in a statement.

Bo Aung Din said the PDP, which is the direct descendant of the anti-Fascist and the People Freedom League founded in 1945 by General Aung San, the hero of Burma (now Myanmar), is currently applying a four-pronged strategy including political and military. He said under the tactic the party intended to charge the military Junta with indictment of crimes against humanity.

The party is also asked the "world investors not to engage in any investment with the military regime until military governance of Burma ends and a genuine democratic government is elected and runs the country under the Rule of Law." He said the PDP did not accept the 2008 military Constitution or recognise the 2010 "Fake Election" organised by the military regime, because "the military regime is incapable of drawing a Constitution."

He said, "The PDP only recognised the 1947 Constitution. Particularly, the PDP does not accept the following points, such as, the 25 per cent of the Assembly has to be kept reserved for the military personnel, the president has to be chosen from the army personnel who has military experience, that president has the right to form the cabinet, and the army has the right to make a coup if necessary." "The PDP sees that it is a lie that the military regime is saying that it is now gradually introducing democracy in Burma.

The reason is, democracy and the military dictatorship cannot be mixed together or work together, and the mentality of the army is incapable of introducing democracy to the people." He said under the military rule, "there is no Rule of Law, democracy, freedom, security, peace and equal opportunity for business and political offices. The principle governance of military rule is coercion and arbitrary rule and violence, including murder, torture, sexual crimes against women and children."

"Under the military rule, there is no security and already tens of thousands of students, monks and citizens have been killed by them since they usurped power in 1962. Millions of people, including minorities were brutally murdered, imprisoned, tortured, women and children were raped and their belongings were looted."
