BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) -- Taylor Kelly threw three touchdown passes to help Arizona State send California to its worst start ever under coach Jeff Tedford with a 27-17 victory on Saturday.

Kelly connected with Kevin Ozier twice and Darwin Rogers once, and Arizona State (4-1, 2-0 Pac-12) used six sacks to improve its impressive start under first-year coach Todd Graham.

The start of the season hasn't gone nearly as well for Cal (1-4, 0-2) and Tedford despite the team returning to renovated Memorial Stadium. The Golden Bears have three straight games and are off to their worst start since losing their first 10 games in 2001 under Tom Holmoe -- who was succeeded the following season by Tedford.

After a strong start to his tenure, Tedford has a losing record since the start of the 2009 season. His only win this year came against Southern Utah of the FCS, and the frustration from fans was evident all afternoon.

Q&A: AEG's Tim Leiweke discusses Farmers Field, NFL in L.A.

With the Los Angeles City Council clearing the way for AEG's Farmers Field, an NFL stadium next to Staples Center, the nation's No. 2 market and No. 1 sports league inched closer to a reunion. But with Philip Anschutz putting AEG up for sale, how does that impact the likelihood of an NFL return? And how does L.A. billionaire Patrick Soon-Shiong factor into the equation?

After Friday's unanimous council votes, AEG President Tim Leiweke spoke with Times NFL columnist Sam Farmer about the Farmers Field vision, and how (and when) he sees the NFL returning.

Question: What does it mean to clear this hurdle?

Answer: It demonstrates to the 32 owners that we now have the ability to finally get this done. We have an ability now to create a long-term play for the NFL where they might be able to create one of the most successful franchises in the league, and they won't have to ever worry about L.A. again.

Q: How long had biotech investor Soon-Shiong been aware of the pending AEG sale?

A: Patrick and I have known each other for a long time. Patrick and I have been talking about this for the last three or four weeks ? just that short a time ? because this is not something that Phil decided he wanted to do until the last four to eight weeks.

Q: Was Anschutz ever really interested in the NFL? Why did he walk away from this deal?

A: No question that the NFL has been a management push. But you don't spend $40 million, use that kind of time and energy, put yourself in these kinds of public negotiations without him being fully on board. He was always on board with it. He'll be the first to acknowledge the next investor that steps into this role will be far more passionate probably about football, owning a team, and being a part of the NFL. And Phil's OK with that.

Q: Will Soon-Shiong be that next investor?

A: I think Patrick is going to be one. There's a half-dozen people that Mr. Anschutz has heard from already. There are going to be many people that look at it with a view to do it.

Q: Have you met with the Guggenheim group regarding the NFL?

A: We talk to them about a lot of different things, including football. I can't speak on their behalf, but I can tell you I hear the same rumors you do, and my job is to field all comers in order to protect the best interest of AEG and Phil. It would be great if they had an interest, and I hope they do.

Q: There's no groundswell in L.A. for an NFL team. Does that concern you?

A: That's L.A. People said we weren't a great hockey town until we made our playoff run, and now we're the greatest hockey town in the United States, and we're sold out every night ? if we could just start playing again.

Q: Do you expect an NFL team to apply to relocate during the league-required window of the first six weeks of 2013?

A: In order for us to play in this game, we have to be prepared to be able to accept a team next year.

Q: When is the last time you talked to the Chargers?

A: I haven't talked to Dean Spanos [the team's president and chairman] in a long time.

Q: Have you talked to the Rams?

6 Cool Things You Can Avoid And Prevent With The E-Cig | What is ...

Most people know of the harmful effects of smoking such as getting chronic diseases yet they continue to puff away. For a non-smoker, they may not understand why one would continue to smoke in full knowledge of the harmful effects. The smoker on the other hand knows how strong the addiction can be. Smoking is not good for your health and at the most extreme end, it can kill you.

To save your life when you still have it, quit smoking. If you cannot quit entirely, then embrace vaping. The e-cigarette emerged into the market almost a decade ago and most of those who embraced it are glad they are very much alive and made the switch. They save money, can hold babies and eat with peace.

As a smoker, you should understand that the addiction of a smoke is due to not only the nicotine but also the habits that go along with the act. Actually, it is the habits that trigger your cravings and make you desire the puff.

You probably are used to getting out with your workmates during lunchtime to puff as you talk about office politics. You began smoking because you and your brother did so to get away from the pressures at home and it has been a tradition ever since. For most smokers, smoking is not only about the nicotine. It is about the bonding moments and the friendships formed.

The e-cig takes away the harmful effects of smoking and retains the cherished moments for you. You still get to bond with family and friends, tap the cig on the table together and exhale together. It has the look and the feel of the cig but instead of the nicotine, you get to vape on a liquid.

This liquid that even has flavors is vaporized when burnt and then releases a great and dense vapor. It is the perfect and smokeless way to enjoy your dose of tobacco. Apart from preventing you landing in the hospital, the e-cig saves your social and emotional life as well.

1.?????? Avoid the social death of people avoiding you

Many people on the streets and at work will stop avoiding you. They do so because even if you chew gum or spray a good dose of mouthwash after a smoke, everything on you smells like smoke and not just your breath. The e-cig has no smell whatsoever.

2.?????? Avoid accidents

Some road accidents are caused by a smoker removing their head out the window to get a puff.

In the process, some may lose track of their driving or not have enough time to react to any sudden thing on the road. The percentage of such accidents is minimal but they exist. Save your life; avoid the accident on the road or a fire started by a butt.

3.?????? Deter bad eating habits

Many smokers do not eat well because of the effects of nicotine. Even when you have a chance to eat well, you have to leave the restaurant because you have to smoke. You do not finish your meal. Such bad eating habits bring bout other complications in the body from a lack of the necessary nutrients. Enjoy your e-cig in any restaurant as it does not emit any smoke and you can eat well anytime.

4.?????? Prevent bad work performance

Too many a times you have given your boss work, he or she did not like. You have lost a job here and there because you had to get a break to go out and smoke. With the e-cig, you simply vape from your desk. Enjoy yourself and give highly satisfactory work. Get those with the pen design and no one will be any wiser.

5.?????? Avoid financial death

The truth is cigarettes can be costly.

Just look at how much they cost you in a month. Now take that amount and slash in half. That is approximately, what e-cigs will cost you. Buy them online and with the offers you get, you will spend even less.

6.?????? Avoid aesthetic death

Beauty is important. Take the e-cig and say good-bye to the yellow teeth and brown fingernails. You will look lovely and still enjoy your dose. You may have to go to a dentist to get those teeth whitened but after that, you are sure they will remain that way. Besides, the e-cig uses recyclable parts and the vapor produced get absorbed into the air immediately without any harmful effects.

Xstrata haggles over management as Glencore deadline nears

LONDON (Reuters) - Xstrata's directors, facing a Monday deadline to deliver their verdict on Glencore's $32 billion bid, are hammering out a deal they hope will ensure the miner retains control of the combined group's board, even after the exit of its veteran boss.

All sides are working towards completing an agreement and announcing the board's recommendation by October 1, sources familiar with the deal said on Friday. However, the struggle to reconcile wide-ranging shareholder views, to ensure the success of the current, last-ditch attempt to merge, meant Xstrata's board could still ask for more time.

Glencore , the world's largest diversified commodities trader, bid in February for the shares in Xstrata it did not already own, launching one of the resources sector's biggest ever takeover deals. But it was forced earlier this month to raise its price - offering 3.05 new shares for every share held, up from 2.8 - in an effort to rescue the tie-up after opposition from the miner's number two investor, Qatar.

As a condition of the change, however, Glencore imposed its own chief executive and largest single shareholder - Ivan Glasenberg - at the helm of the combined group, at the expense of Xstrata's mining veteran boss, South African Mick Davis.

As Glasenberg was already due to sit on the board, Davis's departure within six months of concluding the deal leaves an empty spot - and one that is key to the balance of the 11-strong board. Under the original deal, Xstrata would have six board seats including the chairman, while Glencore would have five.

Sources familiar with the matter said Xstrata was not necessarily seeking a specific name, but they said the miner wanted "assurances" that a satisfactory mechanism would be set up to allow it to retain the majority of seats. Without it the deal would be a takeover and arguably require a higher premium.

"I'd be staggered if this didn't happen now," one top-50 investor in Xstrata said. "There's been unexpected give on both sides - Qatar and Glencore."

Xstrata's board is widely expected to recommend Glencore's revised, higher offer, having backed the lower offer. But its independent directors - already under fire from some minority shareholders angry that the board supported a bid many of them opposed - want to ensure the miner holds on to the team at the helm of its operations which is also expected to deliver some 20 projects by 2014, including four major greenfield sites.

The board had hoped to link a retention package for Xstrata's top employees to a vote on the deal itself thereby keeping the team responsible for its major industrial assets and the bulk of its profits.

But several top shareholders have objected, with some warning they would vote down any such package they consider excessive - and the merger in the event of a combined vote.

SPLITTING THE VOTE?

With just days to go, sources familiar with the deal said the directors could ultimately agree to separate shareholders' vote on the bid from the vote on the more emotive issue of pay.

That would allow Xstrata's board to keep the retention package it is reluctant to change - more than 140 million pounds ($226.7 million) over two years, excluding the outgoing Davis - but allow some shareholders to vote against it without imperilling the deal.

"There is a lot to balance. It is not as simple as (funds and key owners) Blackrock and L&G against the other shareholders - there are wide-ranging views," one of the sources said.

Among other funds, both BlackRock and L&G, which together own 6.5 percent of Xstrata shares, have signalled they do not support elements of the deal.

Qatar, which is not expected to make a public statement until Xstrata lays out its board's position, is said by some sources to support the retention payment and the new terms, but its ultimate position is still uncertain, leading to what several sources said was a "tense atmosphere" on all sides.

Qatar, with just over 12 percent thanks to regular share buying, has proven an unlikely kingmaker in the deal.

Hedge funds have also found themselves in the spotlight - their support could be critical, in a deal where shareholders representing just 16.5 percent of total shares could block the deal. These funds represent 10 percent of Xstrata at the moment, just enough to outweigh vocal rebels including Knight Vinke, Schroders and others.

The Xstrata board's decision, if ultimately positive, will pave the way for Glencore to file its long-awaited antitrust notification with the European Union, setting the regulatory clock ticking in Brussels, the sources said.

Glencore had been expected to file that notification by the end of September, after months of negotiations with officials to avoid a lengthy, in-depth probe. ($1=0.6176 British pounds)

Venus transit movie shows perspective in viewing our Solar System

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? New movies of the transit of Venus on 6 June 2012, viewed from two different locations on Earth, clearly show the parallax effects that have made Venus transits so important historically. The results were presented at the European Planetary Science Congress in Madrid, Spain.

The movies compress 6 hours of observations and 5000 individual images taken by optical and solar telescopes into a 40 second video. Data gaps due to cloudy conditions produce jumps in the otherwise smooth Venus motion across the Sun disk. The observations were taken from Svalbard in Norway and Canberra in Australia, which are separated by 11600km.

When the images from the two locations are superimposed, the parallax effect (which first allowed astronomers to measure the distance between Earth to the Sun) becomes clear. Parallax means that when the transit is viewed from widely separated points on Earth's surface, Venus appears to follow a different path in front of the Sun's disc. Precise observations of the duration of the transit -- together with an accurate measurement of the distance between the observation points -- means that the distance to Venus and to the Sun can be calculated via triangulation.

The images used in the movies were obtained by members of the European Space Astronomy Centre, which is located outside Madrid. Two of the observers, Miguel P?rez Ay?car and Michel Breitfellner are on the science operations planning team for the Venus Express satellite, which has been orbiting Venus since 2006.

P?rez Ay?car said, "During the hours of the transit we were delighted by the slow, delicate, gracious passage of Venus in front of the Sun. A perfect black circle, containing a world in it, moving in front of its looming parent star. How thankful we were to witness it. Now with these movies, we can share a sense of that experience."

Breitfellner said, "In the 18th century people realised that transits of Venus could be used to measure the distance from Earth to the Sun. Teams of astronomers were sent all across the world to measure this effect. The 2012 transit has its own historical importance -- it is the first that has occurred when a spacecraft is in orbit at Venus. Science teams are now working to compare observations of the Venus transit from Earth with simultaneous observations from Venus Express."

Colin Wilson, Operations Scientist for Venus Express, said, "Planetary transits are not just of historical interest, they have acquired a new importance in the study of newly discovered planets around other stars. Because we cannot image exoplanets directly, it is only by studying their transits that we can discover whether they harbour liquid water or other potential 'biomarker' molecules like methane or ozone. The Venus transit is an example much closer to home, offering us a chance to test our understanding of how to interpret transit data. This certainly added extra interest as we watched the Venus transit in June -- particularly knowing it was our last chance that we'd have to wait until 2117 to see the next one!"

Mark Johnson resigns as KV Racing general manager

(AP) ? Mark Johnson has resigned as general manager of KV Racing Technology after a season of high expectations fell woefully short for the IndyCar Series team.

The whirlwind courtship and preseason signing of former Formula One driver Rubens Barrichello had many believing KV Racing would take a big step this season toward becoming one of the IndyCar's more competitive teams. Instead, Tony Kanaan's third-place finish in the Indianapolis 500 was one of the few highlights.

Johnson had been general manager since 2006, and led the integration of the KV Racing from the Champ Car series into IndyCar during the unification of the series in 2008.

"When he joined the team, we set out on a quest to make KVRT one of the most respected and competitive teams in the series, which I think we achieved," team co-owner Jimmy Vasser said Thursday. "There were a lot of forks in the road, series mergers, driver changes, new equipment and new rules. Throughout it all, Mark was a guiding force. You just don't replace the leadership and experience of Mark Johnson."

Johnson's resignation comes as the team faces an offseason of uncertainty.

Only Kanaan is under contract to return. There has been speculation Barrichello is moving to another team and E.J. Viso is exploring several options that include owning his own team. There's also been discussion that KV Racing could go from a three-car team to a one-car team in 2013, or possibly merge with another small organization.

Kanaan, who had three podium finishes this season, said earlier this month the team got "extremely overwhelmed" by the preseason expectations.

"It's easy to get the right people in place, but then you've got to make all those people communicate well and work well together," he said. "We are not Penske yet and we are not Ganassi yet. Yes, we have three cars, and from the outside you look at it and it's the same organization and the same layout and we are well dressed and have nice scooters. But we have to understand that once you get all these good people together, it takes a little bit of time for everybody to adjust."

Kanaan also said the expectations were far too high on Barrichello, who drove an IndyCar for the first time in January and was competing full-time two months later. He also wasn't granted rookie status by series officials, and that cost Barrichello track time during race weekends. He'd also never raced on an oval before this year.

Barrichello had a season-best finish of fourth at Sonoma, where he tested this year, and five top-10 finishes in 15 races. But, his 11th-place finish in the Indy 500 was best among race rookies.

"Rubens, it's a heavy name, but he's still a rookie, no matter what you say," Kanaan said. "Rubens needed me a lot more than I could use him. And E.J. made huge progress from years past. But for us, the expectations were extremely high. I spent a lot of my time helping them, instead of the other way around. We as far as a team need to do a better job of communicating and use all the people and staff to be able to do it. And even then it doesn't mean you are going to be successful."

Johnson worked with at least nine different drivers at KV, and had the team challenging for poles and podium finishes every season.

"A lot has transpired since I joined the team in 2006," he said in a statement. "I am very happy to have been given the opportunity to contribute to so many of the different projects, both in growing the team and in series initiatives."

The Home I Am Renting Is In Foreclosure, What Should I Do ...

questions

Q: I found out the home I?m renting is in preforeclosure. I have children and gave a large deposit. If I move should I expect the deposit back so I can put it toward another place? Where do I look for help?
?Anonymous, Los Angeles, CA

A: You should seek the help of your local attorney to see what your options are but reality may be that the landlord does not have the funds to reimburse your deposit. States have different laws on deposits so check with the attorney to find out the law in CA. If they have to hold it in escrow then it may still be available to you. I would suggest that in a future rental unless it is being managed by a big firm with a great history and track record to add language that the mortgage is verified quarterly as being up to date by the tenant to avoid paying rent while a landlord lets the home be foreclosed.

A: Dear LA-
Some Foreclosure processes have a procedure known as ?Cash for Keys? that help the unsuspecting Lessee recover from upfront deposits lost when a lease agreement is disrupted prematurely by foreclsoure proceedings.

I suggest you take the route of preparing to move to save yourself the hassle of short notice.

Should the knock at your door come before you are ready to move, ask the bank what they plan to do to aid you with financial recovery.

Good luck!

How is a Kindle like a cuttlefish? Parallels between e-Paper technology and biological organisms that change color

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? Over millions of years, biological organisms -- from the chameleon and cuttlefish to the octopus and squid -- have developed color-changing abilities for adaptive concealment (e.g., camouflage) and communication signaling (e.g., warning or mating cues).

Over the past two decades, humans have begun to develop sophisticated e-Paper technology in electronic devices that reflect and draw upon the ambient light around you to create multiple colors, contrast and diffusion to communicate text and images.

And given the more than 100 million years head start that evolution has provided to these animals and their cellular systems, it's not surprising that e-Paper devices lag behind in optical performance, especially color generation.

In an effort to close that gap, a multidisciplinary team led by University of Cincinnati researchers came out Sept. 26 with a paper that aims to help biologists who work with these color-changing creatures and engineers who work with e-Paper technology.

Authors are Eric Kreit, a recent doctoral graduate in UC's College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS); Lydia M. M?thger and Roger T. Hanlon, research scientists at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Mass.; Patrick B. Dennis and Rajesh R. Naik, scientists at the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate, Air Force Research Laboratory, Wright Patterson Air Force Base; Eric Forsythe, scientist at the Army Research Laboratory; and Jason Heikenfeld, associate professor of electronic and computing systems, also in the University of Cincinnati's College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS).

According to UC's Kreit, "Our main goals were threefold: To allow display engineers to learn from millions of years of natural selection and evolution. To teach biologists the most advanced mechanisms and performance measurements used in human-made reflective e-Paper and to give all scientists a clearer picture of the long-term prospects for capabilities such as adaptive concealment and what can be learned from now you see me, now you don't mechanisms."

Ways in Which Animals and Electronics Are Alike

One of the researchers' key findings is that there are numerous approaches to change the reflective color of a surface and that the highest-performance approaches developed by both humans and nature share some powerful common features. Both use pigment, and both change or achieve color expression by either spreading or compacting that pigment. Animals use muscle fiber to spread or compact pigment, and electronics make use of an electric field to do so.

However, even if the basic approach for color change is similar, humanity has never developed anything as complex or sophisticated as the biology and physics of cephalopod skin. (Cephalopods are a diverse ocean group and include 700 species of cuttlefish, squid and octopus -- and are the acknowledged masters of color change on the planet).

According to Heikenfeld, "The highest performance human-made approaches have been only recently developed, well after numerous other approaches were tried. Perhaps in the past, if we had more closely trusted nature's ability to find the best solution, we would be further along today in creating better display technology."

Animals Are Efficient Users of Available Light

Biological organisms that change color are very efficient at using available light. The animal's skin either reflects light to achieve a bright-color effect or absorbs light to achieve stunning, multi-colored effects.

In their use of available light, the biological organisms are more efficient than electronic devices, which generally require large amounts of electric power to generate an internal/emissive light to generate bright color.

Said Roger Hanlon, "Cephalopod skin is exquisitely beautiful and radiant, and can be changed in milliseconds, all without generating any intrinsic light from within the skin; there are elegant solutions from biology waiting to be translated to our consumer and industrial world."

In fact, overall, animals "outscore" synthetic devices when it comes to sophistication and integrated systems; required energy use for color change; size scalability (cephalopods' adaptive coloration works over a wide range of sizes in the organisms' class -- from small-size cuttlefish to large-size octopus and squid); and surface texture (cephalopods can selectively adapt or "crinkle" their skins to match a variety of three-dimensional textures, which provides additional light scattering and shadowing).

Electronic Devices Achieve Colors Faster and Achieve More Colors

Human-developed technology is far superior to cephalopods or other color-adapting animals when it comes to speed. In other words, human-made electronics can achieve color and a color change faster than the response time of a biological organism.

In addition, synthetic devices can provide a greater range of colors and more efficient dark or black state. In other words, a device can achieve a black screen, but most biological organisms cannot achieve such darkened coloring. This is, in part, due to the fact that an organism like a marine animal generally has no reason, in terms of survival adaptation or signaling, to go to a dark or black state. Such an adaptation would actually make them more visible, not less, to predators.

Video: 3-D time-lapse imaging captures twisted root mechanics for first time

Tuesday, September 25, 2012

Using an advanced 3-D time-lapse imaging system, a group of physicists and plant biologists from Cornell University and the Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research have discovered how certain plant roots exhibit powerful mechanical abilities while navigating their environment.

The research, published in this week's online Early Edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, could eventually assist in breeding crop plants optimized for growth in areas where climate change or over farming has led to difficult soil conditions.

The researchers grew Medicago truncatula plants in a transparent gel consisting of two layers ? a soft, top layer and a stiff, lower layer. The roots grew straight down until reaching the lower layer, where they began to twist and buckle into spring-like shapes, much like a string begins to curl if it's continuously twisted in one direction.

Combining 3-D movies with measurements and mathematical modeling, the research sheds new light on root growth revealing the role mechanics plays in determining the root shapes. Ultimately, this led to a previously unknown connection between root geometry, growth, and force generation.

"When the roots hit the stiff barrier, growth causes them to buckle like a wire or rod that's been compressed. But by twisting, the buckled roots become helical, allowing the root to push off more gel and get more force at the tip," said Jesse Silverberg, a Cornell graduate student in the Department of Physics and lead researcher for the study.

"Suppose the plant is growing along and finds itself stuck at a layer of clay or tough clump of soil. The root needs an extra force to push through these barriers, and the mathematical model tells us how large of a helix the root needs to grow to do just that. Roughly, the stiffer the barrier, the larger the helix," said Silverberg.

The researchers also used the 3-D technology to discover that 74 percent of the plant roots twisted in a counter-clockwise manner. Silverberg says further research may reveal similar behavior in other plant species.

Weather 2x for iPhone review

Weather 2x is an iPhone and iPad app that will make even the worst of weather conditions look amazing -- especially on the iPhone 5's new display. The information provided by Weather 2x includes the current condition and a 5-day forecast that can be broken up into 3-hour intervals. Weather 2x does not include in-depth details about the weather, like radars, but rather focuses on bringing the most important information to you in an elegant and beautiful package.

The main screen of Weather 2x will show a photo that represents the current weather conditions at the location you are viewing. These photos are absolutely stunning and really make Weather 2x a joy to look at. Elegantly placed over the photo, you'll see the current temperature, city, time, and a small description about the current weather, like "Clear/Sunny" or "Cloudy". If you tap the screen once, the little description will be replaced with a row of new information: precipitation, visibility, humidity, pressure level details, and wind speed and direction.

A double-tap to the screen will bring up the 5-day forecast. On the iPhone, the forecast will slide up from the bottom, and on the iPad, it will part open a section of the bottom of the screen to reveal itself. On the iPhone, you can also slide the screen up, instead of double-tapping, to bring up the 5-day forecast if you prefer. For each day, Weather 2x will show an icon that represents the weather and the anticipated high and low.

To see the forecast over the next 5 days in 3-hour intervals, slide the screen over to the left for a scrollable list. For each interval, you'll see an icon and the forecasted temperature.

If you slide the screen to right, you'll see a list of all the places you've saved and all their current weather conditions. To delete a city, hold your finger down on it to put it in "jiggly" mode, then hit the x to delete. You can also rearrange your locations when they're in jiggly mode.

The Settings screen is where you go to switch to the metric system or 24-hour time as well as enable sound effects, iCloud sync, local weather, and the time.

The good

  • Stunning weather visuals featuring subtle animations
  • Track, manage and maintain unlimited weather locations around the globe
  • Current weather conditions
  • 5 day weather forecast
  • Hourly weather forecast breakdown
  • Extended weather information including Precipitation, Visibility, Humidity, and Pressure level details, and wind speed and direction
  • Fahrenheit or Celsius
  • View current weather conditions for multiple cities
  • Gesture driven interface
  • Sync preferences and weather locations via iCloud
  • "Local Weather" feature - automatically updates based on current location
  • Share weather conditions via Twitter or Email

The bad

  • Some users report that the temperature can be 5-10 degrees off

The bottom line

Weather 2x is an absolutely gorgeous weather app for both the iPhone and iPad -- the best I've seen. The included gestures are perfect and intuitive and the information is displayed and organized in a very elegant manner. If you're in the market for a beautiful weather app for your iPhone or iPad or both (with iCloud sync!), do not pass this one up.

Potatoes and Kids Classes at Ganim - Art & Entertainment ...

Enrol your little ones in some artsy classes and revisit your childhood with Ganim?s Mr Potato Head exhibition

Ganim?s Store is filled with colourful designer objects and homewares. It?s a tempting paradise for children and possible nightmare for their accompanying parent.

Luckily, the Ganim team are quite fond of children. So much so that they are holding a week devoted entirely to the kiddies. There will be a bunch of creative activities and an exhibition of the beloved Mr Potato Head, and it?s all purely in the name of crafty fun.

Everyone knows and loves the iconic Mr Potato Head for his instantly recognisable black moustache and bright blue shoes and this week Ganim?s Store have asked some of their most creative friends to create their own Mr Potato Head. The result is an impressive collection of potatoes by over 30 artists, photographers and musicians.

Various local artists will be running workshop sessions alongside the exhibition, only for smaller, less experienced hands. Jewellery designer Lucy Folk, whose pieces are stocked in Ganim, will be sharing her gift for turning yummy edible items into fashionable jewels. Her jewellery career blossomed out of a childhood filled with cherry earrings and macaroni necklaces, and her pasta necklace-making workshop may just reveal the next big name in food jewellery design.

Also lending a hand will be freelance graphic designer Samuel Barnes, who regularly volunteers with children?s arts organisations. A big kid himself, Barnes wishes to be just like Italian artist Bruno Munari when he grows up. His workshop will assist the kids to create their own quirky, Bruno Munari-inspired masks.

Potatoes are an essential part of junior art creations and the four ladies behind Harvest Textiles will hold a potato printmaking session as part of the event. Artist and stylist Michael Strownix, a man who is familiar with transforming everything and anything into a masterpiece, will use his potatoes for creating sculptures.

The kids will have a blast getting creative and crafty, and we think the parents will too.

Lucy?s Pasta Necklace-Making Workshop: September 25, 10.30am?11.30am
Samuel?s Bruno Munari Masks Workshop: September 27, 10.30am?11.30am
Harvest Textiles? Potato Printmaking Workshop: September 28, 10.30am?11.30am
Michael?s Potato Sculpture Workshop: October 1, 10.30am?11.30am

Mr Potato Head Exhibition runs from September 25 to October 8. $15 per one-hour class. Enrol via info@ganimstore.com.au, all kids must be accompanied by an adult.

Fish eaters run lower risk of heart attack, despite some mercury content, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? Eat fish, but avoid fish with the most pollutants. This is the conclusion drawn by a group of researchers at Ume? University in Sweden after having weighed the risks of mercury content against the advantages of healthful fatty acids.

The work was done as part of an international collaborative effort.

Fish is healthful food, and several studies have shown that people who eat fish have a lower risk of cardiovascular diseases than those who eat very little or no fish. At the same time, some fish contain environmental pollutants that can be hazardous to our health. One such pollutant that is suspected of increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease is methyl mercury, which is found in varying degree in different kinds of fish. If people eat fish with much pollutants, this would lead to increased risk of disease, but at the same time if people are overly cautious and eat too little fish, the risk of disease also increases.

In order to attain a better understanding of what the golden mean might be, researchers at Ume? University, in collaboration with researchers from Finland and elsewhere, examined how the risk of heart attack (acute myocardial infarction) is contingent on the amount of omega-3 fats and mercury from fish that people have in their body. The content was measured in blood and hair samples from people that had previously participated in health studies in northern Sweden and eastern Finland. The Swedish blood samples were from the Medical Biobank in Ume?. Those who experienced a heart attack after the health check-up were compared with those who did not.

The findings are now being published in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (AJCN). It turned out that mercury was linked to increased risk, and omega-3 fatty acids to decreased risk, of having a heart attack. The increased risk from mercury was noticeable only at high levels of this environmental pollutant in the body and if the level of the protective omega-3 fatty acids was concomitantly low. In other words, what is important is the balance between healthful and hazardous substances in fish. The environmental pollutant in this study was mercury. For organic pollutants like PCB and dioxin, the problem complex is similar, but no study of this kind has yet been undertaken.

The conclusion is simple: Eat fish, but avoid fish with the most pollutants. The Swedish National Food Agency recommends that people should eat fish 2-3 times a week, but their intake of predatory fish (e.g. pike, perch, pike-perch), which contain a great deal of mercury, should be limited (see link below). This study supports that recommendation. According to a recent study from the National Food Agency, 7 of 10 Swedes eat too little fish.

Bus driver resigns after Mayor Greg Davis' trial

SOUTHAVEN, MS- (WMC-TV) - The bus driver at the center of the ruling against Southaven Mayor Greg Davis for unlawfully passing a school bus quit her job Friday.

For the first time, the driver is talking about the complaint against Davis and the judge's ruling.

Tracey Riva has been a bus driver for more than a decade and spent her last six years with DeSoto County Schools.

But Friday, she quit and says she feels she was not supported by the district in pursuing charges against Southaven Mayor Greg Davis.

"It's a school, my job is the safety of those children and I did my job and I had no backup," said Riva.

Riva was driving the bus that Greg Davis was found guilty of illegally passing with flashing blue lights.

"I did not know it was him until he got even with my window and I looked in the vehicle and I saw who it was," she explained.

Riva says she is supposed to report violations like Davis' to the district. But it was her decision to file charges.

She says when she went forward, she had no support from the district other than one appearance at the first hearing.

"It's our job as drivers to report anyone passing our buses because we are the witness, they are not the witness, which I can understand," she said.

A letter of resignation capped off what Riva says has been a stressful process.

Even though Davis was found guilty, Riva says the district should have been there fighting for her as an employee and the students that could have been in harm's way.

"They should always be behind their drivers when it comes to the safety of a child and I feel that in this case, that wasn't the number one priority," said Riva.

The school responded with a statement that reads:

"Every bus driver has the right and authority to file charges when he or she witnesses any violation which interferes with transporting students. Since the driver is the only witness, it is his or her call. Mrs. Riva was encouraged to stay on in her position as a bus driver. It was her decision to resign."

A spokesperson for the district says they do not discourage any driver from filing charges but since drivers are the witnesses, it is up to them.

Riva says she will give up driving buses, for now.

HP Envy 23-1050t

The HP Envy 23-1050t ($1,269.99 direct) is the first HP all-in-one desktop under the Envy brand name. The new Envy PCs are in fact the re-branded version of the HP Omni line of all-in-one desktops, and the Envy 23 accordingly retains many of the same features and design elements seen in previous models, like the HP Omni 27-1015t and the Blu-ray equipped HP Omni 27 and adds a few of its own, like BeatsAudio for a better listening experience.

Design and Features
The Envy 23-1050t retains the distinctive look seen on the HP Omni, with two arms lifting the monitor chassis up from a wide flat base. This design makes for an all-in-one desktop that is stable and also allows the angle of the monitor to be adjusted, or even lay flat if needed. Included with the desktop are two peripheral devices: a wired keyboard, and wired mouse. The keyboard and mouse are basic USB-connected devices, which means that they occupy two of the four USB 2.0 ports found on the back of the system. The basic devices will be serviceable for most, but those who spend a lot of time working on the PC will probably want to upgrade to better alternatives.

The 23-inch widescreen display has 1,920-by-1,080 resolution, similar in size and resolution to the Editors' Choice Asus ET2410IUTS-B018C . Below the display is a built-in soundbar with Beats Audio for improved sound. Taking advantage of this excellent display and sound is a built-in optical drive that plays Blu-rays and reads and burns DVDs. The presence of even a DVD optical drive is no longer something that desktop buyers can take for granted?the recent Vizio 27-inch All-in-One PC (CA27-A1) , for example, has no optical drive.

Along with the optical drive, the sides of the Envy 23-1050t offer two USB 3.0 ports, mic and headphone jacks, and a multiformat card reader (SD, MS, xD). An HDMI output lets you connect another monitor or HDTV as a second display, but you won't find an HDMI input, so there's no using the Envy 23 with your gaming console or cable box. On the back of the Envy 23, you'll find audio and subwoofer outputs, a power connection, and four USB 2.0 ports, though two of those ports will be occupied by the bundled keyboard and mouse. You'll also find the Ethernet port, which is a necessity on the Envy 23 since it has no built-in Wi-Fi.

HP has outfitted the Envy 23-1050t with a 1TB 7,200rpm hard drive, which offers plenty of storage capacity. Unfortunately, you will find that a good portion of it is already occupied by preinstalled software. Some of these programs are useful, such as Microsoft Office Starter 2010 and a 60-day trial of Norton Internet Security, and HP includes a number of tools and services, like HP LinkUp, which lets your desktop and laptop communicate and share files over your home network. But there are several programs you may not want or need, like branded toolbars from Ask.com and Bing. Blio and PDF Complete are there for reading ebooks and PDF documents, respectively, and you'll find a handful of game demos from WildTangent rebranded as HP Games. You'll also encounter a number of games and utilities that are part of HP's MagicCanvas program, which, though designed to take advantage of a touchscreen, has been included on all of HP's current all-in-one PCs. Without a touch screen, games like Bubblewrap, TapTap Bear, and Spot are pretty pointless. The HP Envy 23-1050t is covered by a two-year warranty.

Performance
HP Envy 23-1050t The Envy 23-1050t offers quad-core processing, thanks to its 2.8GHz third-generation Core i5-3450S processor?similar to that seen in the HP 27-1015t, but with a slightly slower clock speed?and pairs it with 8GB of RAM. In CineBench R11.5, which serves as our processor speed benchmark, the Envy 23 scored 5.15, ahead of the Asus ET2410IUTS-B018C (4.70), but behind the HP 27-1015t (5.42). In our PCMark 7 general-use test, the Envy 23-1050t scored 2,943 points, comparing well with the 2,718 scored by the Dell Inspiron One 2320 or the 2,857 points of the Sony VAIO L24 (SVL24114FXB) but again falling behind the Core i7-equipped Asus ET2701INKI-B046C , which led the category with 3,512 points.

HP Envy 23-1050t

The Envy 23-1050t performed well in multimedia tests, completing Handbrake in 59 seconds, beating out even the Asus ET2701INKI-B046C (1:07). We saw similarly good results in Photoshop CS5, which the Envy 23-1050t finished in 3:12, ahead of the Dell 2320 (3:38) and Sony VAIO L24 (4:03), but it once again lagged behind the Asus ET2701INKI-B046C (2:51) and the HP 27-1015t (3:03). But its scores indicate that the Envy 23-1050t is still a decent tool for editing photos and video for digital scrapbooks or home movie collections.

The Envy 23-1050t is equipped with an Nvidia GeForce GT 540M graphics processor with 2GB of dedicated memory, which provides some gaming capability to the all-in-one. In 3DMark 11, the Envy 23-1050t scored 1,838 points at Entry level and 313 points at Extreme settings. The category-leading Asus ET2701INKI-B046C had a considerable lead (3,150 points at Entry settings, 591 points at Extreme), but most competing systems had scores similar to that of the Envy 23-1050t. The discrete graphics processor also opens up the possibility of gaming, producing a playable 47 frames per second (fps) in Crysis and a respectable 24 fps in Lost Planet 2 at low resolution and detail settings.

The HP Envy 23-1050t is the first all-in-one to bear the Envy name, and it's an overall solid system. But even though it carries over everything we liked about the Omni line, like a stable design and slot-loading Blu-ray drive, while throwing in Beats Audio, it's not perfect. Simple features like Wi-Fi connectivity or HDMI input?as seen on the Editors' Choice Dell Inspiron One 2320? would greatly expand the flexibility and usable life of the sytem, but are nowhere to be found. Despite these omissions, the HP Envy 23-1050t is still a decent all-in-one PC for a reasonable price.

BENCHMARK TEST RESULTS:

Nokia stacks up its maps next to Apple's and Google's, politely suggests it comes out on top

You might have noticed a brouhaha over map accuracy in iOS 6. Nokia undoubtedly did, as it's using the iPhone 5 launch to remind us that its strategy has been all about location lately. The crew in Espoo has pitted Nokia Maps from the Lumia 920 against both Apple's equivalent as well as Google Maps -- and to no one's surprise, Nokia's own platform comes out on top. In practice, it's a relatively frank comparison that doesn't try to win on every point. Nokia tends to use a liberal definition of the term "3D" that includes augmented reality, but it's otherwise willing to emphasize its advantages in offline mapping and the sheer scope of its mapping coverage. Apple's very young mapping effort struggles, while Nokia is willing to accept that it doesn't have as much traffic coverage as Google. There is, however, the slight problem of the Lumia 920 not yet shipping: unless you've been blessed with a prototype of the Windows Phone 8 device, Apple and Google are the only ones that have their latest navigation software on a phone you can actually buy.
